Anyone have any updates from their neck of the woods?

I spotted a random photo of Tress Way yesterday so I decided to google him. Apparently things are looking good in camp: (http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post/_/id/4692788/observations-bears-d-lacked-toughness-in-13)

DeCamillis envisions a fierce battle at punter between sixth-round pick Pat O'Donnell and Tress Way. Both have routinely hit the roof of the Walter Payton Center when the team has conducted offseason workouts indoors."Obviously that’s something that’s good, by the way," DeCamillis said. "If it hits the roof in there, that means they are hanging the ball. If they don’t hit the roof that’s usually not a good thing, because that means it’s coming right back at you in the return form. I’m glad that it’s hitting the roof, let’s just say that. But you can evaluate also there, because you can film it and see a tight-line shot of them and see exactly what their strengths and their weakness are as far as their drop, as far as their catch of the ball, everything that comes into play. So we can get a lot of work done in there, but obviously outside is better than inside for us right now.

"I think it's going to be a heck of a competition. I think when we drafted Pat, for whatever reason Tress really picked his business up. He's really punted well and it's going to be a heck of a competition."

"Everybody was here," Smith said. "We finished on a high note. Now, how often do you get to finish with a sno-cone?"

That's right. As practice was winding down, a shaved-ice truck pulled up on the side of the practice field. As soon as practice was over, almost all of the Bucs headed for the truck.

The ice was there thanks to defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13240/gerald-mccoy?ex_cid=null), who picked up the entire tab.

"What I do at home with my family is I take care of my family," McCoy said. "I reward my family when my kids get good grades or do something special and I take care of my wife. These are my brothers. This is my family. We've been working hard since April. We're about to go on break. I figured it's hot out here, I'll do something nice for the whole family."

McCoy ran the idea by Smith in advance and got the coach's approval.

"I said 'Hey, great idea.' Here we are talking to the guys about getting their body fat down and Gerald comes up with this," Smith said with a laugh. "For a day like today, we're not going to count calories. Guys left with a smile on their face."

That's an awesome story. Nothing against Sam (but everything against Suh)... think the teams that picked No. 2 or No. 1 are starting to wish they chose GK instead?

Sadness: After last season he spent more years playing for Tampa than for OU. :(

Denver Broncos/Sooners

Quinton Carter - After missing almost two years to injury, Carter (who played very well his rookie year) has re-emerged this off-season. From all the reports I've read, Q is really standing out. He's been starting in the Bronco nickle package, and (from local reporters) is expected to be a major contributor this season.

http://prod.images.broncos.clubs.nflcdn.com/image-web/NFL/CDA/data/deployed/prod/BRONCOS/assets/images/imported/DEN/photos/clubimages/2014/06-June/temp0A1A8513--nfl_mezz_1280_1024.JPG?width=960&height=720

Corey Nelson - So far, so good for Nelson. He's been practicing with the second team defensive unit throughout mini-camp and OTAs. He's also seen a ton of time on special teams. I don't see Nelson getting cut, because he adds much needed depth to the inside LB until and seems to be playing very well on special teams. He's still learning the defensive playbook, but looks as good as any ILB on the 2 deep right now (Denver doesn't really have a stud at ILB, so there's a opportunity for him).

http://prod.images.broncos.clubs.nflcdn.com/image-web/NFL/CDA/data/deployed/prod/BRONCOS/assets/images/imported/DEN/photos/clubimages/2014/06-June/temp0A1A8365--nfl_mezz_1280_1024.JPG?width=960&height=720

Brennan Clay - There was a local reporter that tweeted something about Brennan this week:

Follow

https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/430888888836423681/6fsyhBLU_bigger.pngCecil Lammey‏@cecillammey (https://twitter.com/cecillammey)

Brennan Clay is a stud in space. Not a pile pusher, but get him the ball as a receiver & he can score any time he touches the ball #Broncos (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Broncos?src=hash)

So, it seems like Clay is getting noticed. Outside of Monte Ball, the Broncos don't have a reliable back, so there is room for Clay, but he'll have to continue to play well this off-season and when camp starts. The Broncos have about 7 or 8 RBs in camp, and will only keep about half. Clay could be one of those on the 53 man, but there's still a long way to go.

I'm looking forward to Defensive Q having a standout year. Here's hoping Clay makes the final roster for your Broncos too.

I was curious how everyone's favorite meerkat was doing... here goes (http://triblive.com/sports/steelers/6278518-74/jones-batch-charlie#axzz35CQFx5z8):

Landry Jones has taken his share of snaps during offseason practices with the second team that not only indicate he's getting better, but also that there could be a battle for the backup job at training camp.

There are actually four QBs on the Steelers roster right now: Landry, Big Ben, last year's backup Bruce Gradkowski and an undrafted rookie that they picked up in may, former Cincy Bearcat Brendon Kay.

With Ben and Bruce both getting older, I could see Landry made the #2 behind Ben... if he performs well in preseason games. Then, he can coast another season like last year, as Ben Rofl played every game. I don't even think Landry suited up at all

I hope Carter has broken that habit of dropping his head when he makes a tackle. I just cringe every time I see it and just hope he hasn't hurt himself (or others). He definitely came up dazed a few times during his rookie year.

Saw this today on an ESPN/Denver Bronco blog about rookies:

At least one from among the group of rookies Brennan Clay (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16980/brennan-clay), Kapri Bibbs and Juwan Thompson (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/17045/juwan-thompson) figures to make the final roster. And there is scenario, certainly rare but still in play given how things went on the field over last few weeks, where the Broncos have two undrafted rookies make the roster at one position.

Of the three, Clay has shown the best hands in the passing game and perhaps the best hands as a receiver in the position group overall. Thompson, at 225 pounds, is the biggest back in the building and has shown a good feel running routes as a receiver and has moved well in pass protection.

Q had a knack for the ball in college. Clay has great hands and body control.
Good luck fellas.

Just a few notes I have read, nothing confirmed.

The Steelers may cut Gradkowski if the race is close between him and Landry as Landry is so much cheaper and younger

This may be Broyles last shot in the NFL if he cant stay healthy

I hope Broyles is stronger than ever 'cause he's gonna need it against the receiver corps Detroit has assembled. It will be truly remarkable if he can hang on to his job.

Ryan Broyles traded to Oakland Raiders? (http://www.sportsworldreport.com/articles/30986/20140609/detroit-lions-rumors-ryan-broyles-traded-oakland-raiders-cleveland-browns-eric-ebron-excels-mikel-leshoure-reggie-bush-joique-bell-starter.htm)

No, not yet, and quite frankly it would reflect very poorly on the Lions if they dropped yet another one of their recent draft choices. Think of all the Lions drafted that are no longer Lions, "Hammer" Ronnell Lewis included.

Still, on a lot of the top Google News returns for "Ryan Broyles," there's a lot of trade rumors. They include the Cleveland Browns (http://www.sportsworldreport.com/articles/30682/20140530/cleveland-browns-rumors-ryan-broyles-denarius-moore-traded-over-andre-johnson-mike-wallace-santonio-holmes-free-agent-josh-gordon-suspended.htm), New England Patriots (http://www.sportsworldreport.com/articles/30788/20140603/nfl-trade-rumors-2014-kirk-cousins-mike-wallace-ryan-broyles-denarius-moore-danny-amendola-traded-before-training-camp.htm) and as noted above, the Raiders. Tom Brady throwing to Ryan Broyles? So awesome for Ryan's NFL future. Johnny Football scrambling as Broyles is wide open for the Browns, sack-fumble-INT? Ugggggggh. I don't know who the Raiders quarterback is now, but it's probably better than the Browns situation.

The important part, no matter what team he's with, is that he's healthy (http://www.4for4.com/fantasy-football/news/item/72688).

“No pain,” he said. “I’m still building up my strength. My left calf is a little smaller than my right one, but I think in the next coupler months I’ll feel pretty good.”

Even though he's with the Lions, go Ryan go. I only like to see my Sooners successful in the NFL, even if it means my Packers lose a few games to their teams. :P

Last year not withstanding, Schaub can be pretty solid IF (& it's a big if) you can keep him healthy. IIRC, he had a stretch in Houston where he was getting called out on his toughness because he was missing so much time.

Here's the latest on Trey: (http://espn.go.com/blog/san-francisco-49ers/post/_/id/7889/what-to-expect-from-rookies)

Trey Millard: The fullback is likely out for the year as he recovers from a torn ACL.

Another report: (http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/Day-3-Observations-from-49ers-Minicamp/dc7e9002-354f-4f64-8917-dd25d67b703d)

Rehabbing rookies Jimmie Ward, Aaron Lynch and Trey Millard were pulling sleds off to the side during practice

I'd like to see him get time to get healthy. It will not impact his pay/status, as he was a low draft pick that could easily get put on injured reserve for the season and come back next year to compete hard in camp.

Lions (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/413) receiver Ryan Broyles (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1243556) made "impressive catches" and "flashed his speed and agility" during minicamp as he continues to progress in his return from a torn Achilles, reports the Detroit Free Press. Broyles told the paper he feels like he's finally getting the benefit of a full offseason. He was planning to work with a speed coach before training camp.

"It’s more just conditioning for the body, a lot of lightweight stuff for me to stay mobile, to stay healthy," he said. "Foot placement and things like that."

Welker is a stout hunk of muscle, and he uses his strength to get off press coverage. Saunders is a wisp of a figure, more like Dexter McCluster and will need to use speed/quickness. But pound for pound, Saunders is a tough fellow, just not a lot of pounds.

Weather was not good for the Broncos/Seahawks game last night, so I didn't even bother trying to take pictures on my phone. Anyway, here's what I took from the game:

Bronsin Irwin (Seattle) - He's listed on the roster, but I couldn't find him anywhere. Anyone know if he's possibly injured?

Brennan Clay - Brennan was on the starting kick-off return team for the Broncos. He's not the designated return man (the Broncos use a single return man for kick offs), but he was the up back on kick off return. His shining moment came when the Broncos Omar Bolden started to return a kick that went deep in the endzone, and Clay kept him from bringing it out. Otherwise, Clay didn't see any action until late in the 4th quarter (he rushed 3 times for 2 yards). By the time Clay got in the game, the game was almost over and decided. He carried it a few times to run out the clock, and got no lanes to run through. With 5 RBs on the roster, the Broncos will probably give him more time next week. He's got an uphill climb to make the 53 man, but the fact that he's starting on ST is a decent sign.

Corey Nelson - Corey got into the game in the second half and looked really good. He ended the night as the Broncos leading tackler (5 tackles), and looked like he was right back to where he was prior to the injury in the TCU game. He still looks like a rookie, but I think he's definitely turning some heads. The only real downside I saw was that Nelson appeared to be the smallest WLB on the roster. He's a good 10 pounds lighter than the guys ahead of him (although he seems to be up in weight from his time at OU), but he also seems a little faster than a couple of the bigger backers on the roster. I think he's definitely making a case to end up on the roster. He also played a lot of ST with the punt team.

Quinton Carter - After Q suffered another injury last year (that forced him onto IR), I thought he may be done in Denver (if not the NFL). I clearly don't know what I'm talking about, because he looked absolutely great last night. The Broncos run a Nickle defense most of the time, and Carter started at FS, and played most of the first half. He looked solid, and doesn't appear to have missed a beat. I think he's a lock for the final roster, and will see a lot of time on the field.

That's all I have from last night. The Broncos are back in town in two weeks (against the Texans), so I'll have a report on the Sooners in the game then. If I hear anything in the mean time, I'll post it here.

Funny story: We were on a Tulsa flight that was also stopping in Denver, and someone, likely the victim of a very evil friend prank, was saying that was just informed that Peyton Manning tore his ACL. So about two dozen Denverites stuck in Tulsa layover were in "Oh noes season ruined" mode. It was like the time we all heard "media reports" about Landry and Sam dealing drugs from some Darth Husker or something.

It would be huge for Tony to be a part of that monster defense Arizona is building.

Gabe Ikard entered late into the rainy Packers-Titans game Saturday as Titans center. Was part of the Tennessee game winning TD drive. Didn't see any big glaring errors and seemed to be solid, but I'm not sure if there's going to be a roster spot for him next month. Hope so!

No Bronco news to report, but since it hadn't been mentioned...

Sunday night, Johnny Manziel made his NFL debut against the Lions. On his first 3rd and short, he tried to do what he did so well in college, and scramble for a first down (it may have been a called QB keeper, not sure). Anyway, he was met at the LOS by Travis Lewis and stopped short of the first down. The Browns went on to punt.

I didn't watch the entire game, but for the few series I watched, Lewis played pretty good and look especially focused on hitting Manziel when/if he could. Of course he was also talking trash the entire time, because that's what Travis does.

It's funny, because I watched the majority of his playing time, and he looked very "meh". He looked downright scared in the first two series.

What I saw looked like he couldn't get past his first read before trying to improvise. If the first guys wasn't open, he looked to run. He had a couple of decent runs on the option, but you can't make a living running the option in the NFL. All of the passes I saw were of the 3-5 yard variety.

I'm not saying he's going to flop, but he's going to have to be about 100 times better if he's going to live up to the hype.

To be fair to ESPN and others, it's not that little Johnny did well, it's that every QB that goes to Cleveland is doomed to failure... but some fail less than others. It's not an endorsement of Johnny, it's saying he sucked less

Oh so you didn't hear about this? (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_26317037/dove-valley-days-trash-talk-increases-chippy-broncos)

This just happened today, so I didn't hear about it until tonight. Clay and Carter know each other, so I'm thinking this was a joke between the two that caught the reporter off guard. I'll keep an eye open to see if anything more comes from it, but I doubt it.

The biggest news today was that SLB Danny Trevathian broke his kneecap in practice and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks minimum. That will move Broncos SLB to start, and should move Corey Nelson up to 2. He'll be seeing a lot more playing time this weekend. It's starting to look like his chances of making the final cut are getting better.

Sad news, Brennan Clay was waived by the Broncos today. First cutdown (from 88 to 77 players), and Clay was one of two RBs let go.

I hope Brennan gets a shot somewhere else, but if this is the end, he's been fun to watch. I've known the Clay family for many years, and Brennan is an incredible young man. I have no doubt that he will be successful in life.

The silver lining is that Corey Nelson made it through the first round of cuts and has been given more responsibility on defense. At the very least, Corey should make the practice squad.

On a positive note, Tony Jefferson is having a nice game tonight, as we speak. Name been called several times by announcers, for good things. Good for TJ!

I didn't realize he was starting. I checked the Arizona Cardinal website (right after I saw him), and he is listed as their starting SS. Good for TJ!

Here's a complete cut list. (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000381516/article/cuts-tracker-player-cuts-for-all-32-nfl-teams)

Sooner waivers that I recall this offseason were...
-Gabe Lynn was let go back in July. He hasn't gotten on anywhere else, so I think that was the end of the NFL road for him.
- Tress Way was cut by the Bears. The Redskins immediately signed him, but they have another punter in camp still, so no telling if he's an NFL punter or not.

I highly suspect that the next few days, Tuesday and this weekend especially, are gonna be a bloodbath as far as cuts go. Include 'em in your prayers every night, both to avoid injury and to avoid a roster cut.

Yesterday's news, but in case anyone missed it, Gabe Ikard injured his ACL and will undergo season ending surgery. I don't know how it will work out with the Titans, they could place him on IR (which is what they'll probably do), or if they release him.

Jazz Reynolds, Cory Brandon, and Keenan Clayton cut. That may be the end of the road for Clayton, he has had a few shots over the last several years

Aaron Colvin to the NFI list per PFT:

When the Jaguars drafted defensive back Aaron Colvin (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/9348/aaron-colvin) in the fourth round of May’s draft, they knew it would be some time before he’d be ready to help the team on the field.
Colvin tore his ACL during the Senior Bowl early this year, an injury that led him to slip to Jacksonville in the draft as well as to the non-football injury list on Tuesday. The Jaguars made the move, which bars Colvin from practicing or playing for at least the first six weeks of the season, to drop their roster to 75 players. Colvin must be activated by Week 11 to play this season.

“We are really pleased (http://www.jaguars.com/news/article-JaguarsNews/Jaguars-reduce-roster-to-75/f14ef6b7-14d9-4925-94ee-c2406b5934e2) with Aaron’s progress throughout the offseason and preseason,” Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell said on the team’s website. “He has been dedicated to his rehab from day one and worked extremely hard with our training and strength staff every day. He played at a high level at Oklahoma and we feel strongly about what he will bring to our roster in the future. He will continue his rehab and we will make a decision on his playing status for 2014 at the appropriate time.”

If Colvin makes a full recovery, the Jaguars should have a useful piece for their secondary in 2015 and beyond.

Gabe Ikard was cut, but if he clears waivers, he'll spend the season on the Titans' IR.

btw, I watched Hard Knocks last night again and my gawd are the Falcons boring. I blame their lack of Sooners.

I know the season has started, but I wanted to update this thread. Corey Nelson made the 53 man roster for the Broncos. This is the most talented Bronco defense I've seen in the past 15 years (since I moved to Denver), and the fact that Corey made the roster speaks volumes. It's too bad we didn't get to see him play a full year last year, but I think it's safe to say he's fully recovered from his injury.

Also, Quinton Carter made the 53 man too, and is expected to see a lot of playing time this season. After two injury riddled seasons, it's great to see Q playing at such a high level.

Corey has played a lot more than anyone expected coming into this season (with Travethan's injury).

He's played really well, and seems to fit right in to Denver's LB corps.

Assuming he continues to play at a high level, and continues to work as hard as he has, he'll be in the league for a while.

I don't know what the play was, but I absolultely loved the fact that Tress Way was the Washington Redskins' leading rusher (at least till late in the game, if not the entire game) with a single rush for more 60 yards.

Go Tress! If you don't go here and vote him to play in the Pro Bowl you're a bad Sooner:

Frank Alexander is back with the stinkin Panthers...per PFT.com

The team announced Monday that they have signed defensive tackle Kyle Love and reinstated defensive end Frank Alexander (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7564/frank-alexander) after the end of his 10-game suspension. They would still need to make another roster move to get Alexander on the 53-man roster as they have an exemption until next Monday and they waived defensive tackle Micanor Regis to clear space for Love.

Gerald McCoy has been placed on the IR for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He tweaked his knee a couple of weeks ago against the Detroit Lions and then yesterday against the stinkin Panthers, he had an odd play, where it looked like he may have hyperextended his knee...or worse. The team announced it was a sprain and no surgery will be required. joebucsfan.com (http://www.joebucsfan.com)

Demarco Murray will need surgery on his on hand...but may still play this week. PFT.com
