This offseason we will count down various topics from Monday through Friday, bringing you the top five of the important and definitely some not so important issues in college football. It's the Doc Five, every week until we will thankfully have actual games to discuss. We have reached May 19, which means we are officially 100 days away from the beginning of the 2014 college football season when Abilene Christian faces Georgia State on Aug. 27. To keep the college football discussion on the tip of our tongues, we’re keeping up with some themes for our weekly Doc Five. On the heels of the NFL Draft last week we brought you the top individual seasons from players who went undrafted . This week, with Memorial Day and Memorial Day Weekend on the horizon, we’ve really begun the peak of grilling season. We’ll definitely be lighting up the grill this weekend, so that got us thinking about teams who really got lit up over the past five seasons, especially when we were expecting a great matchup or expecting an entirely different outcome. We know that the Memorial Day connection is probably a stretch, but we’re going to run with it anyway. Let's discuss.* TOP FIVE UNEXPECTED BLOWOUTS No. 5: Kansas State (2012 at Baylor) Kansas State was picked to finish sixth in the Big 12 by the media heading into the 2012 season, but the Wildcats showed they were a serious contender to win the conference when they knocked off sixth-ranked Oklahoma on the road in Week 4. The Sooners had demolished KSU 58-17 in 2011, so the Wildcats got a big of revenge as the win propelled them up to No. 7 in the polls. Riding the momentum from the big win, Bill Snyder’s team kept up its winning ways against Kansas and Iowa State, before trouncing two more ranked opponents – No. 17 West Virginia and No. 15 Texas Tech – by a combined score of 110-38. Soon enough, after wins over Oklahoma State and TCU, the Wildcats were 10-0 and the top-ranked team in the country heading into a road contest with 4-5 Baylor, a team that had lost four teams the Wildcats had already beaten up to that point in the season. Kansas State was ranked first in the BCS for the first time in program history and had its sights set on a national title. On paper, the Bears seemed like just another average Big 12 team for the Wildcats to beat up on. After the Baylor game, Kansas State would head home and wrap up a conference title and a BCS title game berth with a win over Texas. That’s how Kansas State thought it would play out. Someone forgot to tell Baylor. The Bears’ defense hadn’t been able to stop anyone all season, but Collin Klein, a Heisman candidate, and the Wildcats’ offense could not get anything going early. On the other side of the ball, the high-octane Baylor offense scored early and often in the first half, with the running back duo of Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin picking up huge chunks of yardage at will. The Bears built up a 28-7 lead late in the second quarter. Feeling the game slipping away, the Wildcats managed to decrease the deficit to 28-17 by halftime. This was their chance. The Wildcats would receive the ball to start the second half, but Klein was intercepted by Sam Holl on the fourth play of the drive. The interception, the second of three that Klein would throw on the night, led to a Martin touchdown run. Baylor controlled things the rest of the way, and by the time the third quarter ended, the Bears had opened up a 52-24 lead, which would be the final score. Baylor outgained the Wildcats 342-76 on the ground while lighting up the K-State defense for 580 total yards. Kansas State’s title game hopes were crushed and no one saw it coming. The Wildcats did manage to rebound with a win over Texas to clinch a share of the conference title the following week. That set up a Fiesta Bowl showdown with Oregon -- a 35-17 loss.* - - - - - - - Sam Cooper is a contributor for the Yahoo Sports blogs. Have a tip? Email him or follow him on Twitter!
