Actually, I think it was time/money well spent. By getting this decision on the books, it gives the US a clear position for the next 20,000 people who try to request it. That position is no longer "we have to", it is "We can, but we don't have to".

Getting precedents on the books through an actual court case is never a bad thing (unless you disagree with the precedent of course ;) )
