Baker Mayfield isn't the only former Texas Tech quarterback who wanted to transfer to another Big 12 school. Michael Brewer, another quarterback to transfer from the Red Raiders after the 2013 season , also wanted to play at a Big 12 school. Much like Mayfield, a panel at Texas Tech denied Brewer's request. Brewer wants to play at either Texas or TCU to stay closer to home. He was the presumptive favorite to be the starting quarterback at the beginning of the season. However, he suffered a back injury in preseason practice. A back injury he says the school misdiagnosed as he claims he was healthy enough to play at the fifth game of the season. He ended up throwing 10 passes in 2013. From the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal: “Absolutely,” he said. “I’d been told the whole time leading up to that that I was going to play. Then coach Kingsbury had gone back and forth telling me I was going to play. Coach Kingsbury told me I was going to start for the Texas game, and then two days later called me back and told me that I’m not.” Brewer also said Tech did not accurately assess his back injury at the beginning. “I was diagnosed in June — misdiagnosed, actually — which set me back even further,” he said. “They let me start to practice the beginning of two-a-days when I wasn’t supposed to, which set me back again. It was just small things like that which continually set me back.” He said Tech diagnosed him with a bulging disc and a doctor told him it was a stress fracture. A Tech spokesperson said that within a month of his injury, Brewer was sent to a specialist, whose care he was under until his release. Mayfield, a freshman walk-on last year, wanted to transfer to Oklahoma. He got his wish, but after the same Texas Tech panel ruled against him in January, he's not only sitting out a season, but he's losing a season of eligibility as well by joining the Sooners as a walk-on. It's not the same situation for Brewer. A redshirt sophomore in 2013, he's graduating in the spring. By NCAA rules, he'd be eligible to play immediately, though he needed the approval of the panel to play in the Big 12. He said he's now looking at SEC or ACC schools after he said he was told by Tech officials that not only could he not transfer to a conference school, but to a school in the state of Texas or one on Texas Tech's schedule in the next two years. “The only stipulations put on Michael were he couldn’t transfer anywhere in the Big 12,” Tech spokesperson Blayne Beal said. “He was not allowed to transfer anywhere in the Big 12 Conference, but we are allowing Michael to transfer anywhere in the state of Texas not in the Big 12, something coach Kingsbury does not normally allow. But in this case, he is allowing it.” - - - - - - - Nick Bromberg is the assistant editor of Dr. Saturday on Yahoo Sports. Have a tip? Email him at [email protected] or follow him on Twitter!
