This doesn't even cover the main reasons a lot of activists are protesting these games.

Unless the next two weeks proves otherwise, I hope our corrupt Olympic officials NEVER award another games to Russia

If this is what the most expensive Olympics ever yields than I'd have to say a good portion of the $50 billion budget when to IOC bribes

I'd hate to be a reporter assigned to these games (when has that ever been the case?).

What a mess.

I'll be surprised if something terrorist-related doesn't happen during the games. I think the Russians have at least secured the Olympic Village and the immediate venues, but there is plenty of places near/around the games that are open targets.

The IOC is pretending things are fine. Just makes them look like more of a joke. Compared to the IOC, the NCAA looks like the best governing body in the world.

that's awesome. also, "The Voice of Russia (http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_02_06/Foreign-journalists-fanning-hysteria-ahead-of-Sochi-Olympics-RZhD-head-1621/)" is saying that journalists are totally misrepresenting their wonderful country.

Earlier the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov also accused the West of an attempt to discredit the Olympic Games in Sochi, explaining such attempts by the feelings of envy. " As you know, a biased attitude to our country remains And it will always exist… It is not always that strong, successful, rich and healthy people are loved… And such we are now," he said in an interview with the " Komsomolskaya Pravda " newspaper in late January.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who is responsible for the holding of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, said Thursday that Russia had honoured all its Olympic commitments. "In fact, Russia has built a new modern city for 200,000 residents and created all the necessary infrastructure there."

The sad part is that these athletes chose to be Olympians, and the site the Olympics chose for them was sh!tty Russia. Thanks, Olympics. I prepared my entire life for this moment, and you have decided that the host location is sh!tty Russia. Next time, let's just host it in Antarctica.

Good idea. The weather would be nicer and the accomodations would be better.

That's awesome.

One of the reported tweeted: "For anyone asking, if the lobby isn't constructed in your hotel, you go to the owners room to check-in".

Soooo...when do the USA golds start rolling in?

SPOILER ALERT: We only have two as of today (both slopestyle snowboarding events)

This is my favorite.

Dmitry Kozak, the deputy prime minister responsible for the Olympic preparations, reflected the view held among many Russian officials that some Western visitors are deliberately trying to sabotage Sochi's big debut out of bias against Russia. "We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day," he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. "We're doing a tour of the media center," the aide said.

Curling is hilarious, mens and womens, but yes, especially womens.

You know how women pro tennis players grunt before every damn shot? Picture a group of women grunting like that repeatedly for 15-20 seconds as a metal stone rolls down the ice as they quickly sweep the ice with brooms in front of said stone.

Sadly, the USA team usually loses at this grunt fest

USA curling women now 0-4. I actually like curling - it's interesting in a something different sort of way.

...and did I mention the Russian women's team?! ;) ;)

I would totally gather a group of friends and do a curling contest if there was something like that in the Tulsa area. We have that ice rink setup in downtown Tulsa off the BOK Center around Christmas, but that's usually done by New Year's, sadly. Most years, Tulsa isn't cold enough to have an outdoor ice rink much longer than that (this year, on the other hand...)

I am extremely happy to not watching a single second of this TV event. NBC can go to hell. The pics of Bob Costas are hilarious...

The winter games are not particularly interesting. The events are few and largely limited to cold weather countries with traditions in those sports. If they had not added all those X games snow boarding and jumping events, there would be very little going on each day and you could wrap the games up in a week. Some of the sports are so obscure, like the skeleton sled, that the media created big story of that American winning the silver in her comeback was just not exciting. There's probably a good argument for not having a winter Olympics, given how few and limited the sporting events. When Norway is on top of the medal standings, you have to wonder how this is a world wide competiton worthy of Olympic status.

Based on what I saw from all the abandoned olympic buildings, I think the Olympics entirely should be ended.

btw, team usa had a killer final-seconds goal in the first period, leading the Czech Republic 3-1 after one.

about the only recent olympic success story was Salt Lake City, with a mass transit still in use and you often hear about our own olympians going there to train

I wouldn't be for getting rid of them, but I do think future games should be relegated to cities that already have the venues in place. Of course that'll never happen, because if it did the IOC members couldn't make money on the side.

Anyway, I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised that there wasn't an issue with security with these Olympics. Certainly didn't expect that.

I've always liked the winter games better than the summer ones, but I also love to ski. In my mind, I could train and become a serious downhill/slalom contender! Only in my mind though.
