I know a man who has been handling lead rounds since he was a Marine sniper in Korea. He has a solution to this crazy toxic risk. Wash your hands.

When you handle heavy metals, wash your hands. Seems like we could save some money by following his advice rather than reconstituting the armories of the country.

Yet the wheels on cars are balanced with lead weights that fall off all the time. Millions upon millions of cars are running around with lead on the wheels, that's no problem for the EPA, just if it's in bullets. My uncle used to pick them up all the time on his evening walks and melt them down to form bullets for reloading.

There is a problem with lead in nature. We have been shooting steel shot in Delaware for years. The reason is that it was being ingested by waterfowl.

I posted about the lead facility in another thread started by cruiser. All this predates Obama.

Reason # 14,682,473 this country is in the ****ter...

"Switching to nontoxic lead ammunition will save the lives of eagles, condors and thousands of other birds every year – and, importantly, will keep hunters and their families from being exposed to toxic lead," the Center for Biological Diversity said in a statement (http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2013/lead-10-11-2013.html)http://global.fncstatic.com/static/v/all/img/external-link.png after California Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law a phaseout of lead bullets for hunting by July 2019.

My experience with steel shot is mixed. It does not have the range or knock down power of lead. There are some other loads that are being introduce that are supposed to have lead like quality but they are about double the price. What I found with waterfowl is that you need to call them in closer and not take as long a shot. Once you know the disadvantages you can correct for them and have a good hunt. It takes a while to figure it out.

Here is a paper about one shooting area on Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge in Delaware that was contaminated with lead shot.

Where you run into problems is at shooting ranges that are near waterfowl habitat or blinds that have long term use.

Finally I am dead set against the military changing from lead unless the new ammo has the same range and knock down power of lead or better.

The OP's article says the Military changed there 5.56 to "green ammo" back in 2010.

I'm not denying there is a problem, I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy of the governments enforcement attempts. It's still ok to use it in other places, just not in paint or bullets.
