Not really much of a shock. He has had a rough go at it this year. Hopefully, he lands somewhere else. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24379110/saints-cut-k-garrett-hartley-after-missing-two-fgs-sunday

Didn't see the game, but he went something like 1/3 on Sunday. Probably didn't help much. Even if he's done in the NFL, he's lived a dream. Making millions to kick the football.

He's only 27, so he will certainly get another chance if he keeps himself ready and works with a Zen-master to try to cure his case of the yips. But he'll become one of many journeyman kickers out there hoping for a call and he'll have to earn that big contract from scratch.

Raw deal, kickers getting cut midseason. Tony Romo throws the game away in the closing minutes, no receiver could catch Tom Brady's Super Bowl losing passes and the Saints losing at the Rams? If they're going to pin that loss entirely on Garrett, here's hoping they're a first round playoff exit

Wow, a $2.5 million signing bonus for a kicker?

I remember when Scott Blanton was playing for the Redskins he was making the league minimum or close to it.

He's been awful at times this year. Sooner or not, the Saints had to make a move at kicker to get someone more consistent in there.

I saw a former Broncos kicker recently on Buying Alaska. They were looking for a house on the bay and one particular house was over his budget. He made the remark that he made NFL kicker money, not NFL QB money.
Didn't look like he was hurting though. He owned a plane.

Low salary players have almost no dead money. Hartley only represents a $1 million hit vs Romo ($41 million).

The saints are $9 million over the salary cap and have something like 15 pending free agents. This frees up about $1.5 million for next year so its a smart move.

Yup. I wouldn't mind seeing the Cowboys cut Romo, but financially you just can't do it.

I know, I know. That's why I said its a raw deal. It's like bad CEO decisions resulting in little guys getting laid off, but the CEO gets a golden parachute.

Here's hoping someone gives him a chance. Despite his inconsistency, I'd love him as a Packer. If we're gonna have someone hit-or-miss, I'd rather it be a Sooner than a stupid Colorado Beefalo

Jerry Jones is one of the worst cap managers I've ever seen. I was playing with the numbers the other day and I just don't see how they get out from the crap situation they are in without making their future cap issues worse.

Jerry's a football idiot, in charge of a dysfunctional football program, with a gutless puppet as head coach, and a too cool for school frat boy quarterback that chokes on his own saliva in meaningful games.

I'm a lifelong Cowboys fan, but I hope they never win another game as long as Jerry is in charge of football decisions there.

Kap and Wilson both are looking at future mega paydays if they can stay healthy. Niners and Hawks were super lucky to catch them as 2nd-3rd round picks and not first rounds pre-slotted scale nor free agent signings.

What did Flacco get when he re-signed? I have a lot of respect for him, but Wilson has tons more ability imho. I can't imagine what he'll command. "Pay me now or pay me later" when it comes to really good NFL qb's.

Hope Sammy can have a monster year in 2014 with an improving Rams team. It will be crucial for his financial prospects going forward.
