A Whorn friend of mine says a plane flew from Tuscaloosa to Austin yesterday. The same plane made the flight on Oct 13 and Sept 6 when Sabans wife was rumored to be in town. Funny thing is that the plane is owned by Paul Bryant Jr.

Word is that an offer has been made to Saban and his agent (Sexton). either he signs it or he doesn't, but Texas is making a big play for him.

Texas is letting Mack go off recruiting with his assistant as a safety net, you know, if they can't bag a better coach this offseason.

Nick Saban? Probably not, but at this rate they'd probably settle for someone who wants a big payday that will win more than 9 games in a down Big 12 year

If they can't get Nick, will they try going after Chip Kelly? He is young, innovative, put Oregon on the map, and is used to dealing with high rollers like Phil Knight. He's doing good things in Philly, and Texas has all the money in the world to offer, a similar college town atmosphere to Eugene, and a much better climate than Philly, or Eugene.

I try to read it even though it's NSFW. I especially like the Bama fan take, even if they're nice people that we had a fun home-and-home with last decade. Nick Saban may leave, just like Bob Stoops had opportunities to leave us for the NFL and other jobs (like the Notre Dame one he reportedly took while he was out recruiting for OU, hehe). Totally agree. Bama oversigns the equivalent of an additional recruiting class every 4 years.

Your post has been nagging at me since I read it.

Just finished checking some posts on the Saban-to-sa*et thread at Shaggy Bevo (up to 120 pages as of this morning) and it is reported that UT boosters bought up some debt Saban owes with the plan being to tear up the note once he signs with the whorns, which if true would be about the last bit if circumstantial evidence one needs to conclude this is a done deal.

So if/when he rolls into Austin ready to take a third program to the top, what are the odds that he will parlay sa*et's influence over the Big XII to force a change in the conference rules to allow gray shirting or even through under-the-table style deals with walk ons, i.e. guaranteed scholarship once the inevitable casualties are incurred (transfers, career-ending injuries, academic dropout, whatever)?

Does anyone think he is prepared to compete on a field not tilted in his favor (yes, UT has the money/facilities/recruiting base blah blah blah) but none of that makes up for being able to stock the cupboard with more recruits than everyone else as he has grown quite comfortable doing ever since his stint at LSU?

Four national titles are remarkable but the Big XII is not the SEC and if he thinks he is adept at dealing with privileged boosters and such, wait till he gets to Austin.

The people bringing him in are used to doing things their way and there is still the meddling governor factor working there.

In the final analysis, Nick Saban is not Godzilla and sa*et is still sa*et.

I wonder if he is familiar with the tale of Sisyphus . . .

Jacie, you raise an interesting point. If Saban (or anyone else, for that matter, but he'd have a bigger stick) came into the B12 and started the grey shirting practice in earnest (no, I don't think our conference is lily white on recruiting, but so far, at least, we're not nearly as ... enthusiastic ... about it as the Ess Eee Cee), how long would the other programs hold out? It's kind of like an arms race: if your rival starts doing it, you're pretty much fated to follow suit.

You sure about that?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we can grayshirt. I don't think we're as tolerant of oversigning, though. Even in the SEC, though, they've put a stop to stuff like Houston Nutt signing 38 guys when there are already 64 scholarships, and then proceeding to run off 17 guys he feels are underachieving. 28 (the new limit) is plenty to work with for them, though. Getting rid of 7 guys would've been beneficial as well.

I don't think Saban will need oversigning at Texas, though. His recruiting advantage there should close at least some of that gap. Most teams in the SEC are oversigning (some people like Nutt are putting Saban to shame in that regard), but none of them are winning like Alabama. He's dirty, but the dude can coach.
