As the clock approached game time for the final game at Floyd Casey Stadium, Baylor had its interests focused about 350 miles north of frigid Waco. If Oklahoma could pull off a road upset over Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Baylor could clinch the Big 12 and a BCS berth with a win over Texas. When the Sooners pulled out a win in the game’s final minute, the Baylor sideline erupted, and the game in Waco took on a whole new meaning. Of course, Texas had plenty to play for too. The Oklahoma State loss created a de facto Big 12 Championship Game. The Longhorns had the same Big 12 and BCS aspirations on the line with a victory, but neither team played like that in the first half. In fact, after some sloppy play, both teams limped to a 3-3 tie at half-time. Baylor, with the home crowd at its back, stormed out of the gates in the second half with a renewed sense of urgency. The third quarter started with a 14-play, 77-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a fantastic one-handed touchdown grab by Antwan Goodley on a third-and-nine from the 11-yard line to give the Bears a 10-3 lead. The Baylor defense forced a Texas three-and-out and Baylor responded with another touchdown, this time quarterback Bryce Petty found Levi Norwood for a six-yard score. An Aaron Jones 42-yard field goal after another Texas three-and-out gave Baylor a 20-3 lead late in the third quarter, a lead that the Bears would never look back from as they eventually won 30-10. Bryce Petty finished 21-of-37 for 287 yards and those two TDs, while Glasco Martin and Lace Seastrunk ran for 102 and 78 yards, respectively. The Baylor defense played one of its best games of the year, limiting Texas to just 217 total yards and 2-of-17 on third down. The win gave Baylor (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) its first ever Big 12 championship. The Bears had never even attained a winning record in the Big 12 before Art Briles took over as head coach six years ago, now they’re headed to a BCS bowl game. Texas dropped to 8-4 (7-2 Big 12) on the year with the loss, which will only escalate the speculation of Mack Brown’s job security. Brown declined comment about his future after the game, but quarterback Case McCoy, who completed only 12-of-34 passes for 54 yards and two interceptions, had an interesting take on his coach’s future after the game.
