About $1.96 for unleaded. Unfortunately, I have to run premium or my engine gets all gummed up. So about $2.20.

On the one hand, I hate the high gas prices.

On the other hand, every cent I pay at the pump is $1MM in money the state can spend without taking money out of my paychec.

I'm reading a John Stossell book right now and he shows a graph about most peoples's's not factoring in inflation.
Gas is 22 cents cheaper now than it was in the 1930's.

Gas is 22 cents cheaper now than it was in the 1930's.

And probably infinitely cheaper than it was in 1600. The auto didn't have NEARLY the consumer penetration in 1930 that it does today, so that comparison is rather silly for Stossel to make.

1.19 on Aug 20, 1990
2.76 on October 8, 2007

CPI 131.6 in August, 1990.
CPI 207.9 in August, 2007 (most recent data available from BLS.)

1.19/1.316=$0.90 per gallon in real dollars.
2.76/2.079=$1.33 per gallon in real dollars (sorry about the edit, had a typo on the calculator.)

The August 20, 1990 number was the earliest price for regular unleaded I could find in a quick search. If I recall correctly, though, gas prices were pretty high from a comparative standpoint in 1990.

Edit: The cheapest number for gas in August 2007 is $2.75 per gallon, so change that to $1.32 per gallon in real dollars.

The relative strength of the dollar should also be taken into account as well.

i remember when i was 16 and just starting to drive and being ****ed when gas was over $1 (1992)

although in '98 or so i remember it dipping to like $.79 for a while, that was awesome

CPI would already do that to the extent needed.

hey start your own thread if you want to talk about economics. this one is about gas prices. :mad:There was MAJOR bellyaching in 1972 or thereabouts when prices jumped up, in just a short period of time, from approx. $.25 per gallon to $.50, due to the OPEC price-hike.
