Nobody could be more upset about last night's loss than me. In my opinion it was one of the worst, if not the worst, last minute collapses I have ever seen the SHU basketball team experience in my close to 50 years of watching them. I had the game already chalked up as a win several times throughout the second half. The only thing however that is more unbelievable than the loss, is the words of some on this board that Willard should be gone because of it. Were coaching mistakes made by our head coach, especially in particular revolving around his substation patterns, in the last minute - yes of course! Should he lose his job because of it - a resounding no! Remember with a few different bounces of the ball we could easily be at this point 5 and 0. (With a bad break the other way in the Kent State game we could be easily 2 and 3 - so it works both ways.) Not sure what type of work the folks do that are calling for his head do, but in the work that I do, I do not always make the perfect decision. However in the full scheme of things, my decisions are usually right on target. That's how we should be judging Kevin as well. I think most people would agree especially with the outstanding recruiting class that he has coming in, the future is bright. This year is far from over. I expect a nice win tonight. After six games most had us pegged for a 4 and 2 record. As the season pans out, I predicte both Mercer and Oklahoma will have fine winning records, proving that our losses to them were not bad losses. I feel very good even with the very unfortunate loss of Auda, we can still win out the rest of our OCC schedule, which will mean a winning record in the Big East which I still strongly think is attainable, will get us to the Big Dance. GO PIRATES!

Do our "shooters," and I use that term very loosely, purposely try to just hit the rim? Our offense consists of passing it around 3-4 times and someone then clanging up a long one, OR, someone trying to drive into the lane and either losing the ball by throwing it away or tossing up a brick. (Not abortion of a season just let down) I see this basketball season being the kick off of another golden era of WVU basketball and Football. It came out of no where but lasted from spring of 05 till the Texas Tech game of 2012.

I will say, though, that officiating at the college level is pretty bad. They're just now emphasizing the principle of verticality, and that's been a "rule" in the book since the beginning of basketball. Yet they're still terrible at recognizing when a foul is a foul and when it isn't.

Of course, it doesn't help either when they change the rules - like with this new charging/blocking rule. I'll never understand why people change rules when it has no impact on the game...except to confuse people on what a foul is. Unless it improves the game significantly, leave the damn rules alone.

I will say, though, that officiating at the college level is pretty bad. They're just now emphasizing the principle of verticality, and that's been a "rule" in the book since the beginning of basketball. Yet they're still terrible at recognizing when a foul is a foul and when it isn't.

Of course, it doesn't help either when they change the rules - like with this new charging/blocking rule. I'll never understand why people change rules when it has no impact on the game...except to confuse people on what a foul is. Unless it improves the game significantly, leave the damn rules alone.

They didn't change the rules this year. Just supposed to call it as it is written in the rules. Out front, I think they've made some progress. Down low, not so much. It's going to take a few seasons to change the mindset of trying to have a football game on a basketball court. Hopefully, they maintain patience and don't return to the game as it's been played the last 10-15 years. It took years to get to the point it was and will take time (probably a few years), to be where they want it to be. I'm afraid during the tourney, as they always do, will revert to the extreme physical game again.

It's gotten so bad at the NBA level that I gave up watching. The thing is, it's not that the calls being made are any worse, it's the selective players the calls are being made on that has gotten worse.

Basketball officiating may be the toughest sport to call, because so many of the calls are judgment calls.

I really tried hard not to give you juice for OU's games...but the 2 kids that frustrate the heck out of me are Neal and Cousins....sometimes they just have major brain farts. Our top 3 guys are Buddy, Cam, Woodard...as far as scoring...then Spangler...the do it all guy. I'll eat my crow...Cousins did his thing yesterday, that is good.

What I don't like about Cousins is that he's not very patient. He'll get up the floor against superior numbers and won't pull back and wait for his teammates. He'll either charge into the lane and get blocked or he'll just jack up a 3 before his teammates have a chance to get in position to rebound. He was successful this time because Baylor was absolutely terrible on defense. But I don't trust him at all yet.

Neal - I'm slowly coming around on this guy. I never liked him before this year because he's always been really sloppy...and while everyone raved about his long range jumper, he's never backed that up until this year. He's still kind of a goofy player, but what I like about him this year is that he plays extremely hard on defense, and he's doing much better on the boards. And he's finally hitting jumpers too...when he's patient enough to let the right shot come to him.

Neal, I still think he makes a lot of bone-headed plays on offense (bad shots, turnovers) in particularly important times.
