Bigger, Faster, Deadlier! Navy launches new stealth destroyer

(CNN) - The Navy's newest warship slipped out of dry dock this week into the waters of Maine, marking a new era for war fighting at sea.

The USS Zumwalt, the first of the DDG-1000 class of destroyers, is longer, faster and carries state-of-the-art weapons that will allow it to destroy targets at more than 60 miles, according to the Navy.

At 610 feet long and 81 feet wide, the Zumwalt is longer and thinner than the USS Arizona, a battleship sunk at Pearl Harbor. But it weighs about half as much.

Much of the ship's superstructure is wrapped in a huge, canopy made of lightweight carbon fiber composite.

The canopy and the rest of the ship is built on angles that help make it 50 times harder to spot on radar than an ordinary destroyer.

"It has the radar cross-section of a fishing boat," said Chris Johnson a spokesperson for Naval Sea Systems Command.

The Navy had planned to spend up to $9 billion in research and development on the DDG-1000 program and up to $20 billion to design and deliver seven ships. But cost overruns cut production to three ships.

When it begins missions, the Zumwalt will be the largest stealthy ship in the Navy.

Coming out of dry dock at Bath Iron Works in Maine does not mean the ship is ready to put to sea.

The shipbuilder will now begin installing a considerable arsenal of weapons, including two Advanced Gun Systems (AGS) which can fire rocket powered, computer-guided shells that can destroy target 63 miles away. That three times farther than ordinary destroyer guns can fire.

The DDX will go to sea with a crew of about 150 as opposed to current destroyers which carry a crew of 275. One reason is the AGS is practically self-firing. It needs no sailors to load the shells or remove the spent rounds.

The Zumwalt will also be equipped with a new missile launching system capable of firing 80 missiles, including Tomahawk cruise missiles and Seasparrow surface to air missiles.

Finally it will be able to carry and launch two Seahawk helicopters or four unmanned aerial vehicle.

Its christening had been been scheduled for last month, but the government shutdown forced the Navy to cancel the ceremony.

It's expected to be rescheduled next spring. The shipbuilder, plans to finish construction and turn the ship over to the Navy next year.

Kicking our asses would be the last thing they do. Everything we buy is from there. Aint gonna happen.

Is it Ok If I keep thinking they WILL, WHEN they decide its in their best interest?

I think it'd be more useful to attach it to an active carrier battlegroup
and put that puppy in the Med. When the other two come on line, the
South China Sea and the Indian Ocean would be outstanding tours
of duty....be really useful deterrents....imo.

We're gonna be 'frenemies' with China for a long time; get used to 'em. I don't see them gettiing into anything hot with us for 50 plus years if ever. Too much dinero to be made personally by the folks in charge there and enough space between us to keep things cool for a while.

Now, had we decided to admit the Philippines as a state after WWII, we'd be in a whole different kettle of fish.

You'd think that would be where she ultimately ends up.

Given the way modern combat is shaping up, I'm all for a better Navy. Never know when we need to lob a few dozen Tomahawks into a country and get out without being seen.

Actually Vet, I watched the Japanese get 'real' money from the early 1970's onwards. They shoved it in banks and continued to live like crap.
Then I watched the Chinese start to get 'real' money from the 1990's onward.

They bought ski boats, bbq grills, installed mistresses in beach condos, support the largest Ferrari dealership in the world (not far from Red Square. Wewonwewonwewonwewon!!!!!), go on vacays and act like drunken country bumpkins (including graffitti on the pyramids). I mean I GET these people. They just want to kick back and live well. Like us, they'll get p.o.'d if pushed too hard but basically they're okay.

I remember as a kid being so worried that the US was going to be invaded by Russia. Looking back, it's kind of funny...nobody would ever invade the US, and if they did, why?

Basically they want to be like us. In their own way, of course. But, if you've ever watched a coupla guys with guts sticking out of their shirts (not hairy guts, but still, guts), drinking beer and barbequing something unidentifiable in a vacant lot next to their first floor store, second/third floor apartment at 11:00 am on a saturday, while yelling at their kids and ignoring their wives yelling at them, you will know they are our BROTHA's!

Doubt they'd invade a country that has 300 million firearms in
the civilian population, never mind the best armed military in
the world.....:smug:

Yeah, that didn't help. Other than the fact I thought my buddies and I would be the lone resistance, I was afraid of the Commies.
