View Full Version : Why did we play so much zone defense against Texas?

I understand the need to keep eyes in the backfield for short yardage or run/pass option plays.

But on obvious 3rd down and long passing OU kept dropping back in zone coverage over and over again. McCoy was easily finding guys open in zone.

The scouting report on McCoy is that he's a short arm dink and dunk guy. Yes he hit a couple of long balls in the game but 95 percent of his stuff is short hitches, crossing routes, post patterns to the marker. The way to beat that is tight coverage at the line and jam.

Against David Ash you need to play zone, because unlike McCoy he is a legit run threat at all times and can easily scramble for first downs on 3rd and long. Case McCoy cant do that.

It looks like we hamstrung ourselves playign stupid defense (amongst other things) against a guy that THRIVES against soft zone coverage. We played our hand EXACTLY to his strengths and away from ours.

I dont get it.

It wasn't little McCoy that killed us. 2 100 yard rushers did.

Their line had their way with us
