Read on another site that Merv lost his wife Cindy last night....I guess she had been ill and was taken off life support. The thread also stated he would work today's game. RIP, Cindy Johnson. :(

When I lost my wonderful wife of 31 years to sudden illness, I couldn't even function for 2 weeks. I empathize with Merv, the saddest part of life is losing the ones we love...

And former assistant HC under Barry Switzer. I've met Merv a couple of times, and I'm a really big fan. Great football mind and a super ambassador for OU football.

Thanks. I can't get the Sooners on radio this far down in south Texas, or I'd have known that.

The Joklahoman says she was taken off life support last night, but is still alive. Did she pass overnight and just not reported yet?

I wasn't aware of any of this while listening to the radio broadcast last night.

Winning or losing a football game doesn't seem nearly as important when a true Sooner is enduring what Coach Johnson is now.

Agree with Peeb. OU's broadcasting crew is unique in having coach Merv. I think he still functions in OU football Operations, but I'm not sure. He coached awhile at ND also. What I appreciate about Coach Merv is his technical football insights & blunt honesty. If someone screws up, coach Merv calls it like it is. Most color guys don't have the depth of bacground and first hand experience of a coach Merv. He speaks with real authority. I hope he stays with the Sooner Football network as long as he wants to. He's a true Sooner.

Glad somebody started this thread. I listened to only part of radio broadcast & Toby alluded to Coach Merv having to leave & I got the idea it was personal & urgent, but I had no idea it was something like this. Prayers to Coach Merv & his family at this difficult time.

God Bless Merv. Merv is one of the classiest people OU has ever had. Several years ago he lost his only daughter in a car accident, and came to work that week. I think he considers those he works with as his extended family, and needs that comfort.

So sad that bad things happen to such good people.....

Merv was Rudy's coach at Notre Dame. That's right, he was an asst. at the time and is still good friends with him.
After the '06 RRS some folks on Hornfans were making fun of our broadcast team, Merv in particular.
I mentioned to them that he coached at Missouri, Notre Dame and at OU under Switzer.
They got really quiet after that.

Very sad to hear this news. A few thoughts to share.

1. He was on coaching staffs that won four national championships -- OU in 85 and 2000, Notre Dame in 77, and at Arkansas, i believe it was 1963.

2. I met Coach Johnson and his wife Cindy in Washington, DC at a Congressional reception in honor of the 2000 national champions. We happn to have some common friends, and i walked over and introduced myself, and they just hung out with me the whole time. I think they were thrilled to see some home folks out there.

I spoke at the spring clinic a few yrs. ago. You just can't believe what an asset he is to OU. He treated my assistants like they were from USC. Sad, my prayers.

My heart aches for the Sooner family when this sort of thing occurs. There
are so many good, caring and inclusive folks...it is hard to put words to the
pain that we all feel for our fellow Sooners. RIP, Mrs. Johnson, we are all
better for your presence and your husband's obvious love of the Sooners.

You can tell a good person by hearing them speak and by the people they surround themselves with. Merv is a great man and I know his wife was a peach. Rest easy!
