Yahoo - West Virginia upset of Oklahoma State makes a wide-open Big 12 race even more

It was a foregone conclusion that the preseason favorite for the Big 12 would handle one of the worst teams in the conference on the road, right? Wait, make that one of the worst teams in the conference coming off of a 37-0 loss to Maryland. Yes, it was a lopsided game on paper, but it was anything but on Saturday in Morgantown. West Virginia stifled Oklahoma State in the second half, and defeated the No. 11 Cowboys 30-21. A pair of transfers stood out for West Virginia. Clint Trickett, the third starting quarterback for the Mountaineers in four games, threw for 322 yards while Charles Sims ran for 60 yards and a touchdown to help West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen beat his former team. Trickett transferred from Florida State before the season and Sims transferred from Houston. Before taking the head coaching job at West Virginia, Holgorsen was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. After Josh Lambert kicked a field goal to give West Virginia a six-point lead, Oklahoma State had the ball with less than four minutes remaining to score a touchdown and take the lead. But on the Cowboys' second offensive play of the drive, JW Walsh overthrew his intended receiver and was intercepted by Darwin Cook. That led to a game-clinching field goal from Lambert and that was that. However, that interception was not the biggest missed opportunity for Oklahoma State. That came trailing 24-21 early in the fourth quarter and the ball at the West Virginia 44. The Cowboys drove to the 3, but couldn't score on three attempts, including two from the 1. That meant a 23-yard field goal attempt from Ben Grogan, which clanked off the right upright. West Virginia moves to 1-1 in the Big 12 after losing to Oklahoma in week three. Oklahoma State falls to 0-1 in the conference and already a game behind the Sooners. Right now, the Sooners and Baylor have assumed the roles of favorites with Texas, yes, Texas, even ahead of Oklahoma State thanks to their win over Kansas State. - - - Want to join the conversation?
