I'm more than a week into growing a beard. It itches and is driving me crazy, but I'm powering through it (thus far) like a boss.

Started growing one the week prior to the season starting, and since OU hasn't lost, my son says it would be bad mojo to shave while they're winning. If, by some chance, we go undefeated this year, I'm going to look like one of the guys on Duck Dynasty.

As for the itching, it'll pass. Took me about two full weeks before I quit noticing it, and now I only really notice it if I'm standing in front of a mirror.

I've cheated a little, and kept it "groomed", since I do have to meet with clients regularly, I figured I might as well look professional (as much as I can).

I'm going for the handlebar+goatee combo. I'll have to grow it out a bit to get there. I'm actually not even sure how long I'll be able to grow it out since I've never done this before.

I'm going for something like this only with a lot more curl to the mustache. Also, sexier...much much sexier than this guy.

Something more akin to this, but I'll rock it sexier. Also, I want a little twist at the end of the mustache.

You just gotta promise me you'll get a white vested suit, wear a white straw fedora and carry a white cane once you get the beard/stache. And then get in 'kerfuffles' at 'taverns' while defending the honor of 'honest women' from 'rascals'.

Oh, and you'll have to switch from Zima to 'Kentucky whisky'. Straight. In a crystal shot glass you carry in a little chamois pouch in your jacket pocket.

Probably smoke Sobranie 'Black Russian' cigars, but that's optional.

I just want you to know that you are Baylor's Samson. You ever cut that beard, Baylor will start losing en masse at football and you'll have to go back to being a fan of womens basketball. Also, Art Briles will leave to coach Texas and RG3 will go down with simutaneous knee injuries. And then, Scott Drew will sign a lifetime contract and continue losing to OU when it matters most :D

I vowed not to shave as long as OU continued to win. I figured between Notre Dame and TCU, I'd probably have to shave (keep in mind, this was a decision made in pre-season). Add in the bye week, and I'm 6 weeks into this growth. I've had a goatee for probably 20 years, but I've always kept it neatly trimmed. This is the longest I've ever let my facial hair grow, and it grows fast and thick.

I look like Grizzly Adams (look him up on Google if you're too young to know who that was).

At this point, if I were to shave, and OU lost...that loss would fall squarely on my shoulders. I can't do that to you guys!

I saw Grizzly Adams at a casino in Tunica this summer. He was there for some Western TV and movie convention. He walked by the table while I was playing dice. He did not have his bear with him, but was extremely cordial.

Unfortunately, for you, my growth was clearly preventing the Sooners from playing at maximum ability. Now, without the weight of my facial follicles holding them down, they'll win out the rest of the year. Pass my condolences along to Briles.

I have had a beard for much of the last 20 + years. I have occassionally had periods where I shave for a brief period. When My youngest son Jason (now 6),was about 3 I shaved my beard off,Jason's reaction was immediate and extreme. He looked at me and started crying, sobbing in fear. It took some doing to convince him that I was still his daddy. It was at that moment I realized he had never seen me beardless, obviously he took the change hard.

Nick Florence, who was Baylor's starting quarterback in 2012, said Briles is also adept at figuring out what buttons to push to motivate his players. As Florence was preparing to replace 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, Briles unexpectedly called him into his office before the season opener.

"I think you should grow a beard," Briles told him.

Florence didn't know what to think. He was really surprised later that night when Briles sent him a text message with a photo of Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart. The text message read: "Only one of them is a felon."

"He was too clean," Briles said. "Good Lord, there was a squeak when he walked. You don't have to be bad, but you at least have to have a little edge to you. It's not about appearances. It's about who you are. It doesn't matter how you look."

Why did I think of this thread when I read that? (http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9921488/baylor-bears-football-coach-art-briles-forges-own-path-family-tragedy)

I was going to post something in the Coach Briles thread on the football board, but I don't want to do anything that could potentially throw-off the positive energy for the Sooners this week.

Anyway, I actually read his autobiography, and gained a ton of respect for the guy. It's impossible for me to dislike him. So I feel bad that we're going to ruin his perfect season.

This really happened to me a couple yrs ago:

I am a Gideon speaker, and go out to raise money to buy more Gideon Bibles. We raise money by speaking in churches and collecting an offering. Been doing this for about 15 yrs...

Anyhow, a couple yrs ago during No-Shave November I grew a neatly trimmed beard. (At my workplace we were having a contest) Toward the end of the month I get a Gideon assignment to this little ol' country church. A Holiness Church. Long story short, they wouldn't allow me to speak because of my facial hair (and the fact I was wearing a wedding ring... no rings allowed either; "we cain't have that sort o' influence on our young folks")

Yes, it was a bizarre evening at that particular church. I was invited to stick around for worship, but I politely declined. Went home and watched The Walking Dead.

A church with a prohibition on beards and wedding rings?

Kind of. They did invite me to stay and worship with them, but they would not allow anyone with facial hair to lead their service. And they frowned on rings of any sort.

My pastor tells me this particular sect came up with the beard ban back during the hippie days of the 1960-70s. They proclaim Jesus was clean-shaven, that when the Romans pulled His beard out, they actually plucked whiskers since Jesus had not had the opportunity to shave since His arrest. The ring ban is a form of "not adorning oneself" to distract from worship or something.

Hey, they have a right to their strange practices. So be it. But I know this...I had spoken at this church about 5 yrs previously (was clean-shaven), was not alerted to anything unorthodox. I know darn well I had my wedding ring on, and nothing was said. Maybe they brought in a new pastor or simply decided to return to their very fundamental roots... <shrug>
