View Full Version : OSU Sports Illustrated Article Part 4 - The Sex

In 2003 one of the nation's top high school recruits pretzeled his large frame into an airplane seat and embarked on his official recruiting visit to Oklahoma State. Though several big-time schools were pursuing him intensely, the recruit was intrigued by the Cowboys. The previous year they had appeared in the Houston Bowl -- their first postseason game in five seasons and just their second in 14 years -- and there was an unmistakable sense of momentum surrounding the program.

When the recruit arrived in Stillwater he received an enthusiastic greeting from two members of Orange Pride, a group made up of female undergrads that is described on the university website as an "organization that donates their time and efforts to assist with Recruiting for Oklahoma State and the Football Program." The women explained that they would be taking him to dinner, the recruit recalls, but first they had a stop to make. A short time later he was having sex with both of them. "Rock 'n' rolling, I had the best of the best -- the aces," says the recruit, who spoke to SI on the record but is not being named to protect the identities of the two women.

Hostess programs have been part of college football since the 1960s. Friendly, often attractive students greet recruits, usher them and their parents around campus and promote the virtues of the school. There have long been suspicions about sexual interactions. In 2004 public scandals at Colorado and other schools revealed that sex had been arranged for visiting prospects. Although no formal campus organization was implicated in those cases, several colleges shuttered their hostess programs or rechristened them with less suggestive names. That year the NCAA passed legislation that, in part, prohibited "the use of alcohol, drugs, sex and gambling in recruiting."

Oklahoma State not only kept Orange Pride intact, but by 2004, multiple sources told SI, the group also became a key contributor to the program's rise. Membership in the organization more than tripled; there was a greater emphasis on attracting prettier and more outgoing women; and more than a dozen Cowboys who played from 2001 to '11 told SI that a small number of Orange Pride members had sexual relations with them or with other prospects during recruiting visits. According to the former hostesses who spoke to SI, the vast majority did not have sex with recruits. But for those who did, it proved to be an effective inducement.

I don't think that when SI scheduled this part-by-part daily series that they figured in some transcript discrepencies to hold things up.

Yes, I'm referring to that report ESPN did (http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9665724/documents-undermine-some-oklahoma-state-cowboys-accusers) which calls into some credibility issues in regards to grades and such. A former player with two degrees is more credible than a former player that was at the school for five years but still came away with no diploma.

Since there's no SI report to read this morning, here's my own damaging report on OSU football:

83-17-7 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedlam_Series) is probably still the most lopsided in-state "rivalry" record in college football.

OSU head football coach Mike Gundy used to be a 40 year old man. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoMmbUmKN0E)

Only one BCS bowl victory. One one Big 12 football title. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Oklahoma_State_Cowboys_football_team)

Only one Heisman. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Sanders)

**** it. We all know they suck.

Two observations after reading the 'report'.

1. Still very tenuous ties to the program or the university. This has taken on the definite air of a smear program rather than any real expose.

2. Anyone else find irony in the fact the SI had on the same page as their hand wringing about, I guess, the sexual exploitation of young women, a linkie to something called 'Cheerleader of the Week'?

Virtually nothing the press does in the way of plumbing new depths in human behaviour really surprises me anymore.

Look, we all knew that Part 1 would be the bombshell and the rest would not be much, and that's how it played out. That is why they released it like they did. OSU still has a buttload to answer to, rather than just trotting out the "Thayer Evans is a Sooner homer" defense. They have a lot of this stuff on tape and video. God help OSU if they have that coach quote recorded ("I always knew this day would come" or whatever it is).

LOL, nice post.

But I'm willing to bet that SI knew that some of the interviewees' stories wouldn't completely hold up. They're just getting their brand out there by declaring controversy and writing about things that shock people (well...some people). Even if the reports don't hold up, it doesn't hurt SI any, as most people are going to be focused on how bad things allegedly are at OSU. And at the very least, it's a story that generates interest in their brand. It's certainly been effective in accomplishing that. And if the NCAA follows up with its own investigation and actually corroborates the SI story? They hit a home run like Yahoo did with USC.

Agreed. Even if Thayer Evans is an OU homer and had it out for OSU, he still got a lot of former players to say some pretty damaging (and consistent) things about the program.

Agree. If it can be established the DeForest was handing out cash under two head coaches, it won't matter one bit if there is another truth in the whole story. OSU will be toast.

Does anyone remember Jamarkus McFarland talking about being offered sex while recruited by a Les Miles LSU program? I remember reading about it a while back, with Jamarkus talking about the differences in recruiting between OU and UT/LSU/USC.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/26/sports/ncaafootball/26recruit.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Seems to be a theme with Miles, the sex-based hostess programs. Here it only mentions the mother being upset about the hostesses on the laps of the recruits, but I do remember Jamarkus mentioning sex being offered in another article around this time. I don't know if it has any effect on Miles or OSU, assuming any investigation comes of it, but I found the tie interesting.

Hehe, yeah. Very true.

Honestly, my biggest issue with the whole SI article, though, is the use of the words "elite" and "prominent" when discussing OSU's football program. That pretty much limits the story's credibility in my opinion.

I know that sex and college kids is as much a revelation as water is wet, but here's the thing to remember:

In 2004, the the NCAA passed legislation that, in part, prohibited "the use of alcohol, drugs, sex and gambling in recruiting

Ordinarily, this wouldn't be alarming or news to anyone, but add it to what SI has already reported, and it's just "another violation". Like many have said, if only a small part of the allegations are true, there is enough to seriously damage OSU. Small things, like an Orange Pride member having sex with a recruit, while not ground-breaking, is still a violation of the NCAA rules.

The best part of this is how OSU fans are acting.

By the way, did anyone notice that the ESPN reporter, the one that is calling out SI, is an OSU alum?

Ima jus guessin but seems to me that each of the articles, by themselves,
aint too bad but as the process unravels, collectively, OSU is in a world of
hurt...the AD, at least two head coaches, who knows how many assistant
coaches, at least 60 (disgruntled or not) players....all with too many instances
of time and place, for this to not be really damning to the school, personnel
involved and, to a smaller extent, the conference. I wonder how the NCAA
will proceed...no comparison to the SEC, SEC, SEC and their money issues.?!

All it takes is one substantiated case on one or more of these accusations. Suppose it is possible SI would go out on this gigantic limb but there has to be a couple of grains of truth in there somewhere. Regardless, they are in for an unpleasant time with the NCAA investigators.
