Thought I'd start a thread for any information coming out of camp (and pictures).

8/1/13

Kendall Thompson fractured foot. Expected back in 4-6 weeks.
First practice began at 5:40 am
Second session this afternoon

Not much to report today (other than the breaking news about Kendall Thompson). The first two practices (days) are helmet only (no pads) as mandated by the NCAA, so no hitting/contact until next week. Don't expect much to be reported this week, but I'll add to this thread whenever there is something of interest.

Today concludes the second day of camp. Next week opens with "shells" (helmet and shoulder pads), then later in the week full contact. Nothing much to report from today, but a couple of things to note:

* JUCO transfer Josiah St. John was at practice on Thursday, but did not participate. Today he participated in both sessions.
* Chuka Ndulue was moved to DT in the offseason, and has clearly put on weight (see photos below).
* Quite a few big time recruits are in Norman this weekend (watching practice), so expect a possible commit or two.

Chuka Ndulue (now, in a bigger size!)

What's Roy Finch doing with a ball in his hands?

Let's hope this leads to time on the field:

Josh Heupel on Roy Finch

“A year ago Roy [Finch] got caught a little bit because of our situation at wide receiver. He bounced around a little bit between wideout and running back. For whatever reason he wasn’t playing the way he was capable of at any of the positions. The way he’s approached the offseason in the weight room, academically, in football practices and meetings, he has matured in a great way. Because of that, I feel like he’s going to have a great year.”

Good stuff, 8Time. Which positions do you think are up for grabs the most, i.e. generating the most competition in camp for you guys? Is the staff experimenting with trying any players at existing positions at any other spots? In Tuscaloosa we seem to be pretty settled at most positions, except at TE.

Notes:

* D.J. Ward (incoming freshman DE) is out indefinitely with "Spleen Issue". (This was discovered prior to camp openeing, nothing else known right now)
* Today was the first day of full pads, and the famous "Oklahoma Drill".
* Keith Ford (incoming freshman RB) has looked really good (had an excellent run in the Okla Drill, although Bob Stoops downplayed it).
* Chuka Ndulue looking really solid at DT (technically sound).
* Trey Franks getting praise for playing more "comfortable" at safety.
* Stoops says Tyler Evans is back at practice, but IF he is to play again, it won't be until the second half of the year.
* Sterling Shepard looks like he's a senior (in his level of comfort and what he's shown so far)
* Add Jalen Saunders to the list of players/coaches heaping praise on Lacoltan Bester.

First day of two-a-days.

*Charles Tapper really looking good. Only his third year playing football, and his second year of going through a weight training program.
*Chuka Nudule continues to impress at DT. Went from 253 pounds to 280 over the summer. Offensive linemen call him "very quick".
*Stoops says both freshman linebackers (Evans & Alexander) are looking "very good".
*Corey Nelson has become the most vocal leader on defense.
*Sophomore DE Michael Onuoha had surgery (unspecified) in the spring, will be able to play by game 3 or 4.
*Defensive lineman "loving" the one-gap "just play football" scheme so far.
*Ndulue says JUCO transfer OG Dionte Savage is "going to be a great one". "He's strong and huge, and has almost no fat on his body".
*Cortez Johnson on Trey Metoyer "He's going to be the best WR to ever come out of OU".

Pictures to come after second practice.

* Light day from a team news perspective, but here's the update and pics:

*Coach Stoops announce the new additions to the football staff, which consists mostly of football operations personnel. In addition, Jon Cooper, Joey Halzle, Corey Callens and Courtney Viney are this year's graduate assistants.
*XM/Sirius radio was on campus today, and spent the day with players & coaches. Two comments from host Mark Packer/Houston Nutt that stood out to me:

On Trey Millard
“Trey Millard is the guy to me who stands out. I love his attitude. He’s a throwback because he’s a fullback/H-back and he’s a tremendous special teams player. You can tell he’s one of the leaders on this football team.”

On the Switzer Center
“We go all over the country, Ohio State’s got great tradition, Nebraska’s got great tradition, anybody in the Southeastern Conference has got great tradition, but this is my favorite trophy room. You've got so much to choose from, It’s the only school in the country with four coaches who have won 100 or more games. You could go to different eras of domination and go, man alive that’s how Bud Wilkinson did it in the ‘50s, man that’s how Barry Switzer did it in the ‘70s, wow that’s how Bob Stoops is going it. I just think it’s so unique. It doesn't take away from what Nebraska has accomplished or Texas or anybody else but for me you see so much different stuff, again, it’s my favorite one we go to.”

*Scrimmage today: The team went "game like" conditions for about an hour and forty five minutes, and got in close to 100 plays.

Post Scrimmage Quotes:

Bob Stoops
"It went pretty good, we didn't have many penalties, our guys did a good job that way."
"I thought they (QB's) both did really well, I didn't see a lot of mistakes and I thought they both protected the ball well."
"No one's hurt, everybody made it through really well."
On who stood out
"Alex Ross looked powerful, strong running the ball"
"Zack Sanchez, young corner really looked good. Made a lot of good plays"
"Then all the usual guys that have played a lot."

Josh Heupel
"Both QBs got in some good work, both managed the game well, both communicated well."
"We got in a lot of two minute work, situational work with no time-outs, like they would see at the end of a game, and they both handled it extremely well."
"Up front, we did some good things, with the "A" group. Good protection and did some good things with the run game as well."
"We had some explosive plays in the run game, which tells you the five guys up front did a really nice job in giving them (RBs) some clean looks at the second level."
"We need to get better every day. Who we are today cannot be who we are three weeks from now."

Mike Stoops
"It was okay, nothing great, a lot of mistakes."
"We're installing as we go along, we have to give our players more variation, so it's coming along."
"We still have a long way to go, and it's a good thing we have three weeks left."
"The players that have been here and in the system played well, the ones that haven't are still very apprehensive and tentative. Football is a game where you can't be tentative, and I think we're (young players) are still feeling their way around the football field and thinking too much. We have to work on being a better reactive football team than we are right now, and that just takes time and repetition."

The team is off tomorrow (Sunday), and back to work Monday.

There's a lot of talk about the D-line looking bad today.

I'm not going to try to dissect that, because 1)It didn't come from a coach, and 2)It's really hard to tell what the defensive line is supposed to be doing. I'm not expecting great things early from the d-line, but it's too soon to know what we'll have.

They are also going against a veteran OL with some good depth.

The Sooners were pretty close to missing out on him. Not in the recruiting way, but to the MLB. He ended up being drafted pretty far down the list, otherwise he may have bolted to play baseball.

Practice resumed today.

*The big news from today was Stoops comments on Quincy Russell. "Soon" and "Any day now" were mentioned.
*Stoops will announce Tuesday or Wednesday the status of freshman DE D.J. Ward (spleen issue).

Post practice quotes of note:

Bob Stoops

On how he'll announce the starting quarterback to the team:
“We visit with the individual players. Then the players start realizing who is getting all the number one reps. We don’t do that (announce to the team). That would be treating that position different than any other. We don’t tell them who is going to start at defensive end or linebacker or wide receiver so there is no sense in doing it with them.”

On WR Trey Metoyer’s status:
“He will be okay, just a sprain.”

On WR Lacoltan Bester:
“Lacoltan has really made a big move. He’s making plays, playing strong, and playing really well. Really excited about what he is doing. He is going to have an impact for sure.”

On CB Zach Sanchez being brought up as a positive after the scrimmage:
“Zach played really well. He continues to do a really good job. I couldn’t be more pleased. The young DBs are all really good, young backers are good, the young defensive linemen are good. It’s a really good class, and offensively they are showing up really well too.”

On if the defensive tackles did well in the scrimmage:
“They did for the most part, yes. I’m excited with how they are all playing and keep making good improvement.”

DE Michael Onuoha - (A lot of offensive players/coaches talking about how good his pass rush is.)

I have never found Stoops to be dishonest when talking about practices to the media, so there's something to be said about the fact that he is talking about Blake Bell and Trevor Knight at the same time when asked about who the future starter for the Sooners will be.

When Stoops decides to name a starter, he said he'll meet with Knight and Bell but won't announce it to the team, figuring other players will "start realizing who's getting all the No. 1 reps." He said that making an announcement to the team would improperly elevate the quarterback position over other positions.

That said, I have seen nothing to confirm nor deny this rumor.

If we get a big lead on ULM and they bring Knight in sometime in the 3rd quarter, will they even let him run the offense? That's one of my biggest complaints (besides the fact that the backup rarely gets into the game) is that when the backup does get to play, they spend all their time handing the ball off to a backup RB. Let the backup play AND actually run the offense.

Not saying we're as bad as Piggie was last year, but little mid majors love to raise big stinks in non-conference early matchups. Some, like Utah State and UTEP, have done well with that recently against us (even if we ended up beating both). Others, like Dodge's debut at UNT (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/magazine/archives/news/story?page=magazine-20070910-article43), not so much (we won 79-10) :D

considering that it would be Bell's first start, don't expect Stoops to pull him until the final few series IF we get a big lead. What ticks me off more is when we have a huge lead with a seasoned QB and he does the same. Stoops does deserve some credit for giving Bell considerable PT last year, however.

The biggest news of the day was the arrival of Quincy Russell in Norman. He'll have to go a couple of days without pads, but should be in full contact by the weekend. With the anticipation that has come with Russell's arrival, the kid has a lot to live up to, but at the very least he adds depth to the d-line.

Anyway, the only other "newsworthy" note is the emergence of Alex Ross. Apparently, he's been running with the 1's (although it's kinda hard to tell exaclty which group is the 1's and which is the 2's), and players are saying that he is starting to "show up".

Here's some select pics, as usual, you can see the entire collection on the OU football facebook page.

I remember back in the early to mid aughts us seeing Stoops go three, maybe even four deep on the QB depth chart. Hunter Wall! Noah Allen! We saw everyone play then.

Was this prior to the NCAA ruling that you couldn't redshirt if you appeared in a single snap, unless you were injured? We're there a limited number of plays you could be in before you couldn't redshirt that year anymore?

Good chance we will be better than last year. Our biggest problem right now is our defensive tackles.

* After having Saturday & Sunday off, the team resumed regular season practice today.
* Stoops said he wants to give Bell and Knight a few more practices before making the call. Should be Thursday or Friday.
* Quincy Russell completed his last non-contact practice on Monday, and will be able to fully participate on Tuesday.
* Stoops said Russell will be ready to play against ULM.
* Starting Thursday, the Sooners will begin to prepare for ULM.

While it can be a bit scary, I like that we have 2 Fresh DBs that could get a lot of PT in Thomas and Byrd

We have a lot of young talent in the secondary. Stoops said today that most (if not all) of them will see playing time this year. While I would be surprised to see anyone other than Lynn/Hayes start at safety against ULM, I would be equally surprised if one (or both) aren't replaced by Byrd and Thomas.

Wonder when the last time was that he wore long sleeves in an August practice? Coolest August I've ever experienced.

Since we're in the last week of camp before game week and someone threw out an injury question .. how does the team look so far injury wise? Does it look like the guys will go into week one relatively healthy (for once)?

Chaz

Even though I posted a picture, I still forget about him.

I'm not exactly sure on his eligibility. He's listed on the roster as a redshirt senior, which is strange. Last year was his first year out of JUCO, so I would assume he had two years of eligibility starting in 2012. If he was medically redshirted, that should have given him 2013 & 2014, but it looks like this is his last year.

I'm pretty comfortable with the way the system works, but when it comes to JUCO transfers and how they calculate eligibility, I'm clueless.

Much better than last year.

At this point, there are really only two 'serious' injuries:

QB Kendall Thompson - broken foot
DE D.J. Ward - Spleen

There are a couple more guys that have some question marks, like Michael Onuoha, who had shoulder surgery in the spring is probably won't be available until week 3 or so, but nobody that has a season ending injury (knock on wood).

Typically, there is plenty of information about practice by this time. Today, there has been virtually nothing released.

If Stoops is going to announce the starter today, then it would stand to reason that there would be no images released from practice until the announcement has been made. At least that's my thinking.

D.J. Ward practiced today (for the first time since his surgery).

He's been cleared to go full speed.

Not sure he'll be ready for ND, but I suspect he'll be good by Texas.
