Here's my theory: she got her looks from her mother. Obvious, some might say, but it's more subtle than that. Since children are genetic mixes, the mother's hotness would have to outweigh Steven's butt ugliness. That would imply that the mother would need to be somewhere approaching twice as hot as the daughter just to counterbalance Steven Tyler's stomach churning 'looks'. Now, there are limits in nature to hotness, so we can't expect to be dropped to our knees by the mom's penumbra of beauty, but photos would help if anyone has them.

It also opens up the issue of 'unexpressed hotness'; which would be the left over hotness that simply overwhelmed natural limits and couldn't find expression in flesh. Such theoretical hidden hotness in the mother might form the basis for a theory as to how Liv Tyler emerged from a union between Steven Tyler and a mortal woman.

For a piece of trivia, Tyler (real name Steve Tallarico) was from NYC. Just after this photo, in June of 1967 he sang background vocals on three songs for another NYC group, The Left Banke, who had earlier hits with Walk Away Renee, and Pretty Ballerina.

You can kind of hear him on the chorus of this one:
