Lets keep a thread going to track Sooner draftees as well as Sooner signee draftees...

Jonathon Gray #3 to the Rockies

I don't follow the MLB draft closely, good for Gray, he does get to finish out the season even though he has been drafted?

Collier11

Yea he will finish out, he cant sign until after the season I believe

I cant claim to know how all of our signees and current players rank, but I know that the next off the board will likely be Overton and then probably Cody Thomas our QB signee

Ok thanks, that's good. We still need him!

Good for him though, pretty high pick for us.

Overton to Oakland. Pick 63 of the 2nd round. That is a great organization with a good track record for developing pitchers.

Wonder if Overton will take the route of Gray and come back, or take what will be a pretty good bonus...huge impact on OU with this decision

Max White was rumored to be picked up in the draft...everyone keep an eye out.

Edit: I originally wrote Max Steele....I have no idea where I go that name.

I don't think there's much of a chance at all of Overton coming back. Gray came back knowing he still had multiple years of eligibility. Overton is a senior next year, which gives him little or no leverage. Overton is gone, but congratulations to him -- he went higher than I honestly thought he would.

Ever see the Simpsons episode where Homer changes his name to Max Power? A guy he meets later is named Trent Steele. maybe you combined the two? :)

Max Steele sounds cooler than Max White. Maybe he can change his name too

OU signee Chris Kohler, LHP from Los Osos, Calif.,goes in the supplemental round between rounds 3 and 4 (he was the only supplemental pick that round). Just because he's so hight, I bet we lose him no doubt.

I don't mean to be, just trying to be honest. That's a pretty high pick with a good bonus.

OU signee Jacob Nottingham was just drafted in the 6th round. He's a high school catcher out of California. Again, you gotta figure he'll sign with the combo of him being drafted this high and the fact our current catcher just got named as a FRESHMAN all american.

I missed one: OU signee Drew Ward was selected in the third round. He's a high school third baseman. That hurts as that's almost near likely too high NOT to go, and we need a third baseman next year.

Matt Oberste just went in the 7th round. I'd guess he's gone, because he wouldn't have much leverage if he came back as a senior (signing bonuses for seniors, even if they get picked higher, drop quite dramatically). Congrats to him!

OU signee Trey Michalczewski goes later in the 7th. He's a third baseman from Jenks. A little iffier if he signs, since he's coming out of high school. I tend to always assume anyone drafted in the single-digit round will sign, so I can be a pessimist I admit.

colston15
6/7/2013, 04:00 PM
I think Trey might come to school. He's likely to shift to third and that spot's open next season. No inside info, just a hunch.

Oberste and all others drafted to this point are almost certainly history.

Sheldon Neuse and Alec Hansen haven't gone yet -- which is nice -- they're both really talented.

Cody Thomas hasn't gone yet either. I know the football-niks are pumped about that, but he'll probably make an immediate impact in OU baseball, likely starting next year ... if he still doesn't decide to go pro.

.

I get the lack of leverage as a Senior but I have felt like if anyone might come back it would be Oberste. He may lose that leverage with a bonus but he can have another big year and get into the top 3-5 rds IMO

Is there a rule that states that someone like Cody gets drafted but chooses to attend OU, that he is not eligible for a given amount of time? In other words, if he is drafted this year and declines the offer, would he be eligible for the draft after his freshman or sophomore year?

Collier11
6/7/2013, 09:15 PM
If he goes to OU he has to play 3 years I believe

Talking to a couple of people and reading some things in a few different places, I think the kid from Jenks that was drafted in the 7th round will be a really tough sign for the White Sox.

That can't really go much above slot and the kid really loves OU and doesn't need the money.

And I was only partly right about the pitcher from Colorado. As I said this morning, I'd heard teams were scared away a bit because he was such a hard commit to OU, but I thought he'd still sign because he'd go in the top 10 rounds.

Now that hasn't happened I think there's a real chance he ends up in Norman. That would be HUGE. He's got lots of potential.

The high school catcher from Cali (Nottingham) reminds me a lot of Hunter Lockwood from a couple years back. He's got a lot of power for a high school kid and is an all-around phenomenal athlete. Arizona and some other west coast schools offered him for football.

He went in the 6th round because as I mentioned he has power, but also because he's a really good defensive catcher. He projects really well. No info on his early intentions, but man would it be nice to get him here.

Interesting to note that Sheldon Neuse, infielder/pitcher from Fort Worth hasn't been drafted yet. Everything I've heard and read had him as a top 20 prospect in the Texas high school ranks.

Yes, doesn't matter what ship you are on, in MLB you can either go out of HS or you have to play 3. If that isn't the exact rule someone feel free to correct me

"The high school catcher from Cali (Nottingham) reminds me a lot of Hunter Lockwood from a couple years back. He's got a lot of power for a high school kid and is an all-around phenomenal athlete."

I hope he's not like Lockwood in the sense that he plays only one year then transfers to a J.C. because he didn't want to compete for the starting job. I also hope he doesn't strike out so much like Lockwood did in conference games.

OU pitcher Billy Waltrip goes in the 12th round.

He was the one guy who we really needed to step up this year and he just didn't get it done. I am sure he will sign.

Also, the rule is that you have to play three years or turn 21 before the draft. Some kids turn 21 after their soph year.

colston15
6/9/2013, 09:58 PM
Billy's problems are all mental. 100%.

It's not unheard of, but it's pretty crazy that a guy that didn't even really pitch the last two months of the season went so high in the draft. Oh to be left handed with a 90 mph fastball.

This is correct. One can be a draft eligible Sophomore.

I read that every 7th round pick signed last year. It has to be tough to turn down money in hand and minor league coaching/development. I hope we are surprised and we get one or two of these kids into school who were picked in the top 10 rounds, but it will be hard. People picked after Round 10 can sign for only up to $100,000 or the excess counts against the team's bonus pool money. They are more likely to come back or come to school.

A lot depends on a kid's desire. College isn't for some people. Some kids want to attend college for the experience. Others don't want to deal with the rigors of school while also playing 50-60 baseball games.

Another avenue some of these kids have is to go to JUCO. That way they stay draft eligible every year. It has happened before where an OU signee doesn't sign with the team who drafted him but elects to go to JUCO instead. We really won't know much until the deadline passes in July and the kids enroll in August.

I really, really want our OU pitcher to come to Tulsa Drillers. Any idea where he's headed first? Here's a list of Rockies affiliates:

AAA: Colorado Springs Sky Sox
AA: Tulsa Drillers
Advanced A: Modesto Nuts
A: Asheville Tourists
Short season A: Tri-City Dust Devils

btw, minor league team nicknames kick arse

My guess is that he'll go a Class A short season league and then probably to the Tulsa Drillers sometime later in the summer.

I just saw on the Baseball America draft signees link, and former OU player Hunter Lockwood, who transferred to Weatherford JC, signed a pro deal. Pitching prospect Alec Hansen (Loveland, Colo.) hasn't signed with the Rockies, but junior pitcher Billy Waltrip did.

How is OU doing with its recent JUCO signings? I'd have to know some names so I could search the same site.
