11 of the final 16 teams are set. 10 of the 11 are #1 seeds plus #2 seed OU. 5 elimination games today in which all 5 have #1 seeds. There's also a #3 and #4 seed (and 3 #2's) playing today.

OU/LSU starts either Friday or Saturday and play up to 3 straight days (barring rain outs).

I'm not feeling so great about this series. I know OU matches (if not slightly exceeds) LSU in pitching, but the batting is where they may have the Sooners. It also doesn't hurt that the game is in Baton Rouge, and they are pretty freakin' wild for college baseball there (it doesn't hurt that they've won it all plenty of times). Unlike football or basketball, crowd doesn't come into play quite as much, but it's still going to create some kind of a distraction for our boys.

LSU/Vandy & UNC look like the best 3 teams in the country, but teams like OU, Oregon State and NC State could be overlooked. Hopefully, the great pitching and defense will get the job done against the Tigers.

SG made two huge mistakes, IMO. We should have squeezed in a run in the fifth. And he should have put a man on in the 8th to get the DP. The leading run is already on 3rd. You have to get a strikeout or a DP.

We got screwed on the pickoff call. That ump was dying to make an important call and be a huge part of the game.

hvhurricane
6/7/2013, 08:37 PM
Their pitcher was not as good as we made him look. He only has two pitches. We did a bad job of protecting the plate and getting him into deep counts. When the pitcher only has two pitches, that is a lot easier to do. This is the same problem we have had against good pitchers all year.

One other thing, I am so sick of these bats. These one and two run games are getting old. The pitchers are not that good and the hitters are not that bad. Can we please adjust the bats again so we can see some more scoring. The way KSU hit the ball this year is amazing, given the bats. This is not MLB.

Collier11
6/7/2013, 09:15 PM
So you would rather go back to having 15-13 games and every pitcher on the staff having over a 4 era? These bats give us the most realistic relation to wood bats and that is what we need to be doing

hvhurricane
6/7/2013, 09:27 PM
I don't like MLB. I started watching college baseball first. I like having games with more offense than we have seen the last two years. I like aluminum bats. I like seeing HR's. These bats have a smaller sweet spot than wooden bats. They built a new stadium in Omaha based on the old bats, and now nobody comes close to hitting a HR. I don't need 17-14 games, but it should be somewhere in between. We are talking about a difference of about 80 HR's a year for OU. Think about that for a second. Max White was hitting bombs his FR year and now he is lucky to have warning track power.

8timechamps
6/7/2013, 09:31 PM
When Gray was close to 80 pitches in the 5th, I figured he had to be getting fatigued...surprised SG rode him as long as he did. Regardless, I thought Gray pitched a great game. All in all, the Sooners played pretty damn good. LSU is a cut above most every team in the country, and OU pretty much played right there with them.

The bad news is Gray won't pitch again this series. The good news is Nola won't either. Once you get past Gray and Nola, there is a sizable drop-off for both teams, but I think it's bigger for LSU. It's going to be an uphill climb to win the series, but if the Sooners can win tomorrow (which I think they will), then it's back to one game...and anything can happen.

Collier11
6/7/2013, 11:09 PM
I think the big key is that we need atleast 7 from Overton, he has been getting high into his pitch count too early since his return

So, just about every good team in the country has pitchers with an ERA below 2? That is ridiculous. Those pitchers aren't that good. They are benefitting from a dead bat. These kids aren't going to be better pros because they pitch against this bat. Both pitchers last night rarely used a third pitch. That will not even work in AA ball. And I don't think one kid in the country having 30 home runs makes up for the difference overall. Again, OU has an 80 HR difference. There has to be something in between. This will definitely not help the game grow. There should be at least 2 HR's in a game. Seeing teams struggle to even have gap power is difficult to watch at times.

You missed an ESPN slurp-fest, but I tempered my disgust with the fact that OUr girls pretty much got the same treatment last week in OKC.

What? We scored 1 run in two games, and you're complaining about our pitching?

I am thinking you might want to read over the quote one more time. I am saying we are going to have to find some great pitchers out there because we are losing a first rounder and a second rounder, although I didn't think DO really pitched like a second rounder much of the season. I don't think we have the pitchers on campus who will be able to fill those roles. As far as hitters, we obviously need to improve our offense, but I think due to the bats, recruiting is hitters is just luck. The KSU players were not highly recruited at all and they all can mash. SG usually does a good job of bringing in players, so I am sure we will field a quality team again next year. I am just not sure it will be an Omaha worthy team. You have to have quality pitching to win in the postseason, but you also have to have an above average hitting team as well. When we went to Omaha, it was because our hitters carried us there. Clutch hitting is the name of the game in June.

C&CDean
6/10/2013, 10:31 AM
It was a frustrating end to a semi-frustrating season. That said, our pitching was absolutely good enough to get us to Omaha. Our hitting? Not so much. I think the freshmen struggled, and so did our big bats when it counted. Our tendency to commit errors also bit us against LSU.

All-in-all though it wasn't a bad year. Putting it into perspective, it's about what/how we should have done. Hope Sunny can get a couple good arms, and I seriously hope our hitting improves next year.

I was also at the Sugar Bowl and most of the stereotypical bayou cajun redneck coonarse tigahbaiting that everyone hears about occurred, as least to me, before the game. Bourbon Street and surrounding, there were LSU flags and fans everywhere giving anything dressed in crimson a lot of crap.

Duirng the game, they were loud and such, they had 90 percent of the tickets after all, but they didn't seem any worse than what you get in the Big 12 from opposition during games.

LSU baseball fans are much better overall than their football fans. They gave both Gray and Overton a standing O when they were taken out of their respective games. They are a very knowledgeable baseball fanbase. I personally think they are the team to beat going in to Omaha. That said I wont be rooting for them. The SEC can go **** up a rope.

I watched the NCState / Rice dual yesterday/evening/night, into the 17th where State won their first trip to the CWS since 1968!

Indiana is going for the very first time and the first Big10 team in quite a while.

I saw that on TV and thought slightly higher of them after that.

We were in a local Buffalo Wild Wings watching the game Friday night and some LSU fans bought us a round of beers because they felt sorry for us having to sit there surrounded by LSU fans. I've also been to a game in Tiger Stadium wearing opposing team gear (Tennessee, because I went to UT for grad school) and had no problem. You have to remember that Bourbon Street attracts a questionable crowd anyways and when you add it it's their first title game in 50 years, every drunk coonass within 100 miles of Bourbon Street was flocking there.

The tiger bait thing didn't bother me. If it was hot chicks giving me the tiger bait, my strategy was Yes, I'm tiger bait. Take me and abuse me. Somehow it didn't work.
