They say that the USPS got millions of dollars worth of exposure via the Lance sponsorship.

My question: Why the **** does the government monopoly on mail need more exposure?

exposure...where in France? They spent 40 million supposedly...and considering they are not only broke but deep in the red.

I agree, the gov doesn't need more exposure.

Ask the folks who know. Surely there is an expert on this board.

For the eleventybillionth time, the USPS is not a government agency - in terms of funding. No tax dollars paid Armstrong. Stamp/merchandise sales did.

The United States Postal Service faces a $5.5 billion loan payment that's due August 1.

They don't "fund" the mail service, they just loan them billions of dollars. :P

sigh...

For the eleventy billionth time, the USPS is the only government agency that is required to pre-fund retiree health benefits. Get it? Pre-fund. For thousands of employees who haven't retired yet. Billions of dollars per year. It is something the USPS is still attempting to get Congress to fix. Without this requirement, they make pretty decent jack.

There was a reason Lance waited so long to come clean, and I believe a lot of it has to do with statute of limitation laws. There is no way he ever would have come clean if it mean losing all that endorsement money. I'm not sure most of them will be able to recoup any money from Lance.

The prefunding does hurt the bottom line but even without the prefunding they are billions a year in the red...

They lost 16 billion last year...5 billion in 2011...8.5 billion in 2010....I am pretty sure they did not fund in 2012 or 2011 since they didn't have the cash, I do know they missed the scheduled dates...also, I think the payment was waived by Congress in 2010...with or without the 5 billion annual payment they have still been deep in the red...

In all fairness they are at the mercy of Congress...they can do very little without Congressional approval....and Congress ain't gonna approve the plan the USPS has proposed...even though it is a fair plan that would go a long way to solving their problems....

My take on what is going to happen....

Congress won't do anything because they know if they agree to the USPS plan they are going to pizz some group or another off and they damn sure won't do that...

The debt will continue to expand....the pensions won't get prefunded...and Congress will need to give a massive influx of cash to keep them operational...

IMHO the USPS will never be debt free as long as Congress keeps their fingers in the deal.

exactly...and are not floated BILLIONS of dollars...

so, I'll go back to my original question...why is a GOV AGENCY sponsoring an athlete...? that better?

From everything I've read, there was ample evidence of Armstrong's personal jackassery in advance. I don't have much sympathy for folks who gave him money to promote their business.

Who I would like to see get back at him are the folks he sued for telling the truth.

Exactly! They are funding retirement for people who not even retired yet or even born for that fact.
