As big as her unbending will in the Cold War was, her more lasting contribution to the progress of the human race was shattering the British labor unions. They had damn near destroyed Britain.

And, you know, he deserves a certain degree of respect and gratitude as well. He was, and remains, I believe, a committed Communist in his heart and yet he had the grace and humanity to refrain from going to the mat to defend his system against the will of his people. He was perhaps the first leader the Soviet Union had who was more of a human being than apparatchik. Very lucky he was in office rather than a Stalin or even a Brezhnev. It could have been so much worse.
