All of this research could have been taking place in Texas but Bill Clinton had to act like a pissy teenage girl and cancel the Texas Super Collider project in a vindictive political move against Texas and his predecessor.

Clinton cancelled funding for the project on environmental grounds, as I recall.

It was going to be Texas sized, for sure. Three times bigger than the one in Switzerland.

everything i'm finding says that he couldn't convince congress to keep paying for it after it was WAY over budget, and they chose to fund the ISS instead

Clinton was the first that proposed killing the project and a democrat controlled Congress followed through on his wishes. He later rethought his position because it must have dawned on him that that a project like this would have been a huge contributor to the scientific research field and would have helped promote his legacy. Like so many other things, Clinton was on both sides of the fence in this project but he initially opposed it for the very reasons I gave.

From Wikipedia(including references for the benefit of Diverdog):

Congress (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/United_States_Congress) officially canceled the project October 21, 1993[12] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-Sun-Journal-12) after $2 billion had been spent.[13] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-13) Many factors contributed to the cancellation:[3] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-weinberg2012-3) rising cost estimates; poor management by physicists and Department of Energy (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Energy) officials; the end of the need to prove the supremacy of American science with the collapse of the Soviet Union (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Soviet_Union); belief that many smaller scientific experiments of equal merit could be funded for the same cost; Congress's desire to generally reduce spending; the reluctance of Texas Governor Ann Richards (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Ann_Richards);[14] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-14) and President Bill Clinton (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Bill_Clinton)'s initial lack of support for a project begun during the administrations of Richards's predecessor, Bill Clements (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Bill_Clements), and Clinton's predecessors, Ronald Reagan (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Ronald_Reagan) and George H. W. Bush (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/George_H._W._Bush). However, in 1993, Clinton tried to prevent the cancellation by asking Congress to continue "to support this important and challenging effort" through completion because "abandoning the SSC at this point would signal that the United States is compromising its position of leadership in basic science".[15] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-15)

Was it in Heaven?

No Switzerland or France....I'm not sure which of the two since the 17 mile collider is in both Countries but I'm betting they'll both claim they are heaven. It's good for Tourism. :D

Democrat Jim Slattery from Kansas was the idiot who sponsored the drive to kill the super collider. And I thought it was the Republicans who were anti-science.

Kansas?

i think all bets are off at that point.
