Its like a fan interference call. I didn't see what the umps did in this particular case but they likely awarded the batter second base (judgment call on what he would have got without interference) and any runners two bases.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. So many balls are so borderline. I know they look at the ump for guidance but given enough opportunities people make mistakes.

Sorry no joke is coming to me...
