Who is the Greatest Black Male Singer evar? Perhaps there are others possible? I don't mean performer. That would be between Jackie Wilson and Michael Jackson, IMHO.

i like both those guys a lot, and they each had a lot of good/great songs, but to me they don't have the incredible voices that the other 4 have. Like any musical taste thread, this is subjective, and lots of the younger folks here aren't as familiar with the ones I rated.

Marvin is one of the greatest. I played his cd and it hit me this guy was someone special. I watched him profiled on American Masters on PBS. What a master, but such a sad, twisted, and broken man near the end of his life. Mother, mother . . .

I doubt too many on here will know him because of his genre (gospel), but for pure vocal quality, I haven't seen a name mentioned yet that tops Larnelle Harris.

No no and no. Otis Redding has some fantastic live albums. I like his version of Stand By Me, but he ain't the best voice evar.

The Wife mentioned Al Green. Good One. Now that you mention Sam....I agree. What's funny is this thread is really bringing back some great memories of a lot of the old Music we really seemed to take for granted back then. Good Stuff.

Ben E. King should be on the list, but I would probably vote Nat King Cole #1.

For those of you that didn't catch it, Smokey was on Live From Daryl's House. Definitely worth the watch if you can find it.

As to the thread... the reality is that there's no such thing as "the best" but we've certainly been blessed with a ton of extremely talented singers.

There's a fellow from St. Louis in AI this year that's got a little talent. He's a little over the top for my tastes but the boy can definitely sing.

Speaking of St Louis, I understand Chuck Berry is 86 now. i certainly wouldn't rate him as a candidate for best voice, but YE GODS, what a song writer. He and Stevie wonder would be my candidates for best black songwriters of the 20th century. Eddie Holland wasn't so bad either, nor Berry Gordy.

Yes, Smokey Robinson's voice is? spectacular. At least it used to be.

Brook Benton was one of the greats imo.

As for females, the only competition is for who comes in a distant second to Aretha.

Brook Benton was one of the greats imo.

As for females, the only competition is for who comes in a distant second to Aretha. He did have an excellent voice. Some folks I've talked with confused some of his songs, saying they thought Nat Cole made them. Aretha Franklin is superb. Back when she was chart topping, had a bunch of killer songs, with great performances. What about Mariah Carey? She has a super voice, but I'm not sure about her music. Never have really warmed up to what I've heard from her. Any Mariah fans here who would list some recordings she did that they thought were great music?
