Thoughts are it wasn't "shot down", but likely a meteor that exploded coming through the atmosphere.

How big was the meteorite? The asteroid is only the size of an olympic swimming pool but supposedly would do a lot of damage if it hit the earth.

I heard upwards of a thousand and most were from standing looking out the
windows when the shock wave exploded windows for miles around....

read 10ft in diameter and about 10 tons...all I know is it looks depressing and cold there...ugh.

Bite your tongue, boy. The women are pretty and the natural resources are vast, but there is not much else I find admirable about Russia. Half the male population is alcoholic and their work ethic is the product of living under Communism and czar dictators. Oh, wait, those little Russian toy figures which are inside one another are neat, but it is one big underachieving country.
