PBS Fontline: The Untouchables: The non-prosecution of financial execs.

Just finished watching this at the PBS website. It aired Jan 22. Pretty good show, they make the point very well that the Justice Dept for some reason was unwilling or averse to going after financial firm executives who were at the heart of the banking crisis. None were ever charged or indicted.

Its a little disappointing that they didn't try harder to ask: why? I'm sure we all have our theories. The only answer they could get always had the same couple of words thrown in: "its complicated".

Obama and his SEC have been as accomodating of Wall Street as Bush was....maybe more. At least the SEC and DoJ under Bush went after the crooks at Enron and World Com. Who has Obama's administration gone after? Buehler?, Buehler?

Wow, now this is a coincidence. The man in charge of the investigations for the DOJ was a guy named Lanny Breuer. (not to be confused with jazz guitarist Lenny Breau). He has just resigned:

He was a real circle talker. They managed to get ahold of a speech he gave to a bar association saying he was very worried about the consequences prosecution might cause. I would imagine a couple of guys above him were even more worried about that.

Capitalism only works when there is risk and reward. Although it's natural to try and reduce risk if you're an investor, there must be fear to balance greed.
We've taken the risk out of the system, so we have two generations of fat, arrogant and, worst of all, incompetent investment bankers.
99% of the clods on Wall Street today should be pumping gas in Omaha or working in a chorus line in San Francisco.
