Illinois is a landlocked Midwest state. I'd have to say that the model blue state is one of the coastal elitist states that like to look down on us poor southern/midwestern hillbilly/redneck states and how uncultured and backwards we are. No wonder a majority of people moving in the U.S. move to red states :P

Not really landlocked with Lake Michigan.

OK, so they get a little bit of Lake Michigan, but it's not exactly the same as having a beachfront oceanview :)

I bet the red state people love that.

But this stat surprises me. I thought the top five immigrant states were Calif, NY, ILL, Texas and Florida - 4 out of 5 being blue.

Come now. There's nothing like a warm breeze off Lake Michigan carrying the fragrance of dead alewives to one's anticipating nostrils.

I'm basing my little joke on the census/house seat thing:
http://www.census.gov/2010census/img/apport_total_chart.jpg
A majority of the states gaining house seats via the census are red

I think she was talking about migration within the country rather than immigration. California has been losing residents moving to other states for at least a couple of decades, but has made up for it by immigrants from Latin America and Asia. New York and Illinois, not as much.

I am surprised that you all are still on that. Can't be go back to making fun of blue states?

Ja, let's move to a blue state! Ja, there's bound to be no jobs once we arrive! Ja, and if we do find work, we can give up even more of our paycheck to state taxes! Ja, I'd rather the state give my money to people that don't work or to underfunded government pension funds! Ja, and maybe while we're there they'll legalize gay marriage and make it illegal for the private sector to make money!

Ja.

They are just following the Texas/Mississipi/Alabama plan.

Yes, rural southern states have traditionally had higher rates(per capita) of pverty, but states like California, NY and Illinois are rapidly gaining on them. It would be this negative trend that would worry me if I were the governor of onw of these states. And it is a trend I don't see reversing anytime soon.

The trend is your friend in most things unless it's not.

Yes, they have tradionally had the highest rates. Can you name another characteristic they share? Also, it appears that states that have been considered more well-off are approaching the poverty rates of the south including the bluest of the blue.

And if one is to believe the article in the OP Illinois has actually surpassed them.

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A staggering one out of three Illinoisans today lives in or near poverty — the peak of a continued climb over three decades, a new study finds.

I choose to live here because it's where my family is from and the city isn't a redneck third world hellhole like the SE portion of this state mostly is. As to more freedom, ask those impoverished folks how free they feel and whether they'd prefer not to be in poverty.

How do you explain Minnesota and Wisconsin? For the life of me, I can't figure this out, except for the LARGE number of people on the dole...

A county by county look at the Pres. elections results shows a huge swath from Appleton northwestward up through the arrowhead of Minn. as solid blue...guess were the government assistance is going...

Everybody is a "guide" and on welfare...

Something about this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_African-American_population

Blacks in the South aren't poor because they're black, they're poor because they lived in apartheid states until around 60 years ago.

Generational poverty is a thing. Those states oppressed their minority populations for years and now are reaping the rewards of that stupidity.

NYers move because of the winters. They are called snow birds up here. Most of them tend to move to areas in the south that are populated by other NYers.

I would attribute it to years of getting stuff from the government to losing a drive to provide for oneself and letting someone else cover it for you. Government policies continue to reduce the family dynamic and allow for non-nuclear families and people shirking their responsibilities...

So, you are saying blacks in blue states have lower poverty rates than blacks in southern states? Is that your final answer?

Lyndon Johnson came to Mississippi 50 years ago to declare his War on Poverty and the inner cities are reaping the benefits of decades of gov't social engineering. But you go on with your talking points stolen from Al Sharpton.

Btw, How do poverty rates of blacks in Northern cities compare to poverty rates in the South?

Yes, rural southern states have traditionally had higher rates(per capita) of pverty, but states like California, NY and Illinois are rapidly gaining on them. It would be this negative trend that would worry me if I were the governor of onw of these states. And it is a trend I don't see reversing anytime soon.

The trend is your friend in most things unless it's not.\
If you were governor of one of those states, I think that negative trend would end.

The problem with the states that are rapidly circling the drain is that nobody who could turn things around will ever be elected.......but thanks.

Here is an interesting synopsis regarding the causes of poverty:
Factors in poverty

There are numerous factors related to poverty in the United States.
Income and intelligence have been found to be related. Charles Murray compared the earnings of 733 full sibling pairs with differing intelligence quotients (IQ’s). He referred to the sample as utopian in that the sampled pairs were raised in families with virtually no illegitimacy, divorce or poverty. The average earnings of sampled individuals with an IQ of under 75 was $11,000, compared to $16,000 for those with an IQ between 75 and 90, $23,000 for those with an IQ between 90 and 110, $27,000 for those with an IQ between 110 and 125, and $38,000 for those with an IQ above 125. [40]
Income has a high correlation with educational levels. In 2007, the median earnings of household headed by individuals with less than a 9th grade education was $20,805 while households headed by high school graduates earned $40,456, households headed holders of bachelor’s degree earned $77,605, and families headed by individuals with professional degrees earned $100,000.[41]
In many cases poverty is caused by job loss. In 2007, the poverty rate was 21.5% for individuals who were unemployed, but only 2.5% for individuals who were employed full-time.[41]
In 1991, 8.3% of children in two-parent families were likely to live in poverty; 19.6% of children lived with father in single parent family; and 47.1% in single parent family headed by mother.[42]
Income levels vary with age. For example, the median 2009 income for households headed by individuals age 15–24 was only $30,750, but increased to $50,188 for household headed by individuals age 25–34 and $61,083 for household headed by individuals 35–44.[43] Although the reasons are unclear, work experience and additional education may be factors.
Income levels vary along racial/ethnic lines: 21% of all children in the United States live in poverty, about 46% of black children and 40% of Latino children live in poverty.[44] The poverty rate is 9.9% for black married couples and only 30% of black children are born to married couples (see Marriage below). In 2007,11% of black women aged 30–44 without a high school diploma had a working spouse.[45][copyright violation?] The poverty rate for native born and naturalized whites is identical (9.6%). On the other hand, the poverty rate for naturalized blacks is 11.8% compared to 25.1% for native born blacks suggesting race alone does not explain income disparity. Not all minorities have low incomes. Asian families have higher incomes than all other ethnic groups. For example, the 2005 median income of Asian families was $68,957 compared to the median income of white families of $59,124.[46] Asians, however, report discrimination occurrences more frequently than blacks. Specifically, 31% of Asians reported employment discrimination compared to 26% of blacks in 2005.[47]
The relationship between tax rates and poverty is disputed. A study comparing high tax Scandinavian countries with the U. S. suggests high tax rates are inversely correlated with poverty rates.[48] The poverty rate, however, is low in some low tax countries such as Switzerland. A comparison of poverty rates between states reveals that some low tax states have low poverty rates. For example, New Hampshire has the lowest poverty rate of any state in the U. S., and has very low taxes (46th among all states). It is true however that in those instances, both Switzerland and New Hampshire have a very high household income and other measures to levy or offset the lack of taxation. For example, Switzerland has Universal Healthcare and a free system of education for children as young as four years old.[49] New Hampshire has no state income tax or sales tax, but does have the nation's highest property taxes.[50]
The conservative Heritage Foundation speculates that illegal immigration increases job competition among low wage earners, both native and foreign born. Additionally many first generation immigrants, namely those without a high school diploma, are also living in poverty themselves.[51]

A couple of other facts:
75% of families with children that live in poverty are headed by single females.
70% of black families with children are headed by single females.

You do the math.

Ja.Perhaps many just want to move there(blue states) for the handouts. Easy money, just vote D, and you're more than welcome.

I'm basing my little joke on the census/house seat thing:
http://www.census.gov/2010census/img/apport_total_chart.jpg
A majority of the states gaining house seats via the census are red

Makes sense!
More people in Chicago being murdered.

Yep. As expected, no response on this point. I'm sure Al Sharpton would have a response. It wouldn't make sense, but he would have a response.

With a few exceptions, higher crime rates are linked to voting Democratic.

IDGAS about red/blue, but I do know this: driving in Illinois sucks obama dick. Pretty much 55 and 60mph - even on the interstates. Hate it when I have a trip up that way. Also, the folks in southern Illinois ain't nothing like the ****sticks in Chicago. They're Cardinal fans and everything.

Their streets also suck. On the ones that are plagued with potholes, they have street repair jobs that make the street level... just not level with anything, like the manholes in the middle of them, the curbs on the side. Gag

You know I live in Minnesota in the Twincities area and cant figure it out of the life of me. I have heard of case of people on welfare moving here because the benefits are better. There is a strong contigency of people who are proud that HHH and Wellstone were from Minnesota. Hell there are people who still put a Wellstone bumper sticker on their car every year. I dont get that either. When I moved here I was shocked at how much I have to pay in taxes. The educational rate has Minnesota 2nd in the nation in HS degrees, 10th in undergraduate degrees and 17th in Graduate degrees. The people here are educated. One thing for sure, the suburbs around the Twin citys would be considered Red, while St Paul and Minneapolis are very Blue. When voting results come in they are very often the suberbs first and it looks red, then the down town results come in and turn everything blue.

Is there a bordering area/state with lesser benefits that drives the numbers? We have that in my area. In Maine and Mass benefits are strong while in New Hampshire not so much in state assistance, etc. There is a much poorer populace in Maine and Mass.

You touched on it here and FA alluded to the same in regards to education. I am surprised since we have many teachers that post on here that no one has tried to link education with poverty? Mid could draw out the graphs but I think there is a correlation to spending per student and educational opportunities as it relates to poverty areas. I know much of the red states are on the bottom on spending per student.
