when they were "supposed to"?

Hasn't happened in my lifetime. It sure wasn't in 2000, and I remember the '85 team being "a year or two away" from the title.

Sometimes team chemistry, and finding the right mix of players can catapult a team to the top. I'd say that most years a team ends up in the title game that wasn't a heavy favorite to be there.

Maybe 2013 for the Sooners?

Who was supposed to win the National Championship in--

2012? USC
2011? OU
2010? Alabama
2009? Florida
2008? Georgia
2007? USC
2006? Ohio State
2005? USC
2004? USC
2003? OU
2002? Miami
2001? Florida
2000? Nebraska

... I could go into the 90s... but I'm not sure college football was played bewteen 1990 and 1998.

Welp, most of the 90's was a dark time for OU, not Nebbish, tho. For us,
I think the mid 70's kinda went as expected....

You have a pretty good idea usually who is who and what to expect... but you never really know. Even though most would say the safest bet next year is Alabama, it could very well be Texas A&M, Clemson, OU or Tulsa (but never OSU :P).

Not according to the AP. OU was pre-season #1 in '85.

Also was #1 in 1975

according to SoonerStats.com, the beginning of the '85 season shows OU was ranked #2.

oh, I see now - OU was #1 Pre-Season, but didn't play a game on Week 1. Number 2 Auburn whipped up on ULL and took over #1 without OU even playing a game!

That was a very odd year. OU didn't play their first game until Sept 28. Minnesota had already played two games.

I believe part of the reason is that the SMU game was moved to the end of the season.

That was the only reason; SMU game should have been Sept 14 i believe, but the TV bigwigs moved the game to the end of the season; remember back then OU didn't play on TV every week. lol

Not according to the AP. OU was pre-season #1 in '85.

Maybe the AP "knew", but I remember Bob Barry Sr. talking (in the pre-season) about OU still being a year or two away. Going into that season, Aikman was the starter, and it was going to be a "new" era in Sooner football. Lot of unknowns.

I was pretty young in '75, so I probably didn't pay any attention to who was supposed to win it all.

Also #1 in '56

Not in my lifetime. :)

Speaking of SMU, they were the biggest flop of the year. They started out #3, & ended up 6-5 after OU whipped them.

Man that was a great year to be a Sooner fan. Throw out that KU game, we still had a great year.

Enough to be the best at it. I believe that you guys hold the record for most preseason no. 1 rankings and then actually winning the NC at the end of the same season.

I had read this thread before, but when I saw it just now, it struck me that an awful lot of fan bases can't really address such questions. Either they have never won it all, or they have never been predicted to win it all, or both.

It sure is great to be a Sooner!

Good point. Not many out there can think in those terms with any regularity.

Wait. I don't remember USC winning in 2004....

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but 2000 Oklahoma is advancing in this computer simulated all-time tournament over on PickSix Previews. Typical gutsy, resilient, champion-instinct 2000 Sooners...
Pretty cool concept, and just 8 teams remain:

1985 was the last time they won the title after being ranked as preseason #1 but, as most historians are already aware, they didn't go wire to wire and needed a little help to fall back to #1 in the end.
