Took a player's scholly out from under him 3 days before coming to school.

It's crappy, but it happens everywhere.

It's just a little crappier because it's Kiffin, the king of pond scum.

At least he did this before the kid signed a binding agreement otherwise the kid would be heading to a lower division.

Not sure how this works, if the kid had signed and then Kiffin pulled the scholly,
would the kid still have to stay or lose a year to transfer to another D!?

I think he would have had to transfer to a FCS or lower school, or wait a year. He could petition for a waiver, but that would probably not be settled in time for him to play in 2013. It's a really screwed up system.

If he is ineligible to sign with another school, the school that he signed to should be ineligible to sign that scholarship to someone else

It's sad on USuC's part, but a small part of me says the kid got what he deserves for wanting to go to that program in the first place.

I also am not sure how this works. According to the article, he has decommitted & is looking for another school.

This is bad, but not as bad as if he had already enrolled. If he had to pay his way, even for only 1 semester, going to
USC would probably be VERY expensive.
The bad part is he has to wait around, probably even if he goes to another school.

Doesn't look to be as bad as what they do in Alabama. JMHO

Yes. This is the real shame involved with greyshirting. That letter of intent is binding for the kid but not the school. Furthermore, the kid is bound to the transfer rules even if the school backs out.

That's why the Saban thing posted earlier isn't as bad as it could have been. In years past Saban wouldn't have told the kid before signing that he didn't have a slot for him. (Maybe the kid will stay and pay his own way and even if not why let him go to Arkansas and compete against you?) Now with the soft limit of 25 the SEC imposed Saban was forced to be upfront with the kid before signing.

In this situation, since the kid was a January enrolee I don't think he signs a LOI and since he hasn't attended classes his options are still available.

In the greyshirting case it's too late. The school has signed too many people so the scholarship is already assigned long before the kid was told to hit the road.
