College basketball meltdowns 2013

Due to the extreme popularity of the college football meltdowns (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?170184-2012-College-Football-Meltdown-Thread), I have decided that perhaps I can get some SF.com'ers to finally give up football for the offseason if I post smut from opposing fan message boards after their teams embarrass themselves a lot.

And, I sat through part of Baylor-Tech last night and it was OHHHHH SOOOOO BAAAAAD. So, here goes:

It Could Be Worse
...we could be the Georgia Bulldogs who cannot ever seem to win no matter who they hire. Or even worse, the Arkansas Razorbacks who allowed their fans/boosters pressure them into overpaying for Mike Anderson, who could only go .500 in conference with one of the most talented teams in the country at Missouri the year before last, and who will never win "consistently" enough to justify his salary. I do not believe he will get them back to their glory days in the 80's and 90's, but how will Arkansas' administration ever be able to make a change with him, if needed, given his history with the school and the apparent favor he has with the money and fans there? I have seen grade school teams play better fundamentals than the Razorbacks. No blocking out for rebounds unlike anything I have ever seen. No defense from their guards. Stupid fouls. Guys standing around on offense. No real motion or apparent offensive scheme. Seem to only rely on turnovers. They appear to be Bruce Pearl without any of the coaching or fundamentals.

The more I look at basketball meltdowns the more I wonder why nobody did this before. Basketball is far more frustrating than football for fanbases, because of one thing: Officiating. At least in football, officiating rarely stops the game (except false starts and unabated to the qb, illegal substitution, instant replay review... ok I'll stop now before I destroy my own argument)

I hope it encourages some people here still smarting from football agony (my Packers lost to an NFL version of Johnny Football last night, so I understand it's hard) and to follow basketball, because OU has two solid teams this year.

All I'm going to say is that this, so far, is completely on coaching. I see defenders capable of great defense not recognizing the strength of the offense they're playing. I see Walton TAKING ****ING HORRIFIC SHOTS. He does not need to take big shots. He needs to take the shots that are given to him. I see Austin having no idea of his limitations. I see Gathers and Jefferson not playing enough minutes. I see Franklin playing Releford like it's his first time around.

Too bad I don't have a link, and it is ancient history. But I sure had fun with reading the Lobo women's basketball boards when OU pounded them in the second of two games at the Pit that year. I only got to see the first one (WNIT, preseason version) due to illness. But we won that one by 11, then won the rematch by 13, after leading by as many as 27. The locals thought the first one was a fluke, and it proved to be anything but in the Dec. 30, 2005 rematch.

Who else is tired of sending out 1 or 2 decent players and a lot of scrappy, go-getter, hustling type of guys? This strategy is great for 2A high school ball but come on. No offense to these guys as they are trying to do what they can - they just have very limited skills. I'm just tired of watching 3 or 4 guys who consistently get minutes in D1 games who are better suited for playing at the Rec.

Next, does our coach even talk? I know he's sick and I'm sorry for that. Every time the camera cuts to him - which is typically after something sheety has happened (like another turnover) - he just seems to starte off into space like he's trying to remember how to talk, much less yell. At my office, when people get sick they take off (for as long as needed) and are replaced in the interim by folks who deliver.

And lastly, before I get torched by the "pumpers"....how in the hell do we get high profile players such as Reese who for whatever reason come in and can't put up 10 points a game?

the first step in recovery is to admit you have a problem. I wish Ford would just admit that he and his team suck on the road. No excuses, no if and buts, just come right out and say "My name is Travis Ford. I am the coach of OSU baskettball, and me and my team suck at road games". Once Ford and his players openly admit they suck at road games then, and only then can things start to change. Blaming poor shooting 24 out of our last 30 road games is called denial. Once we admit we set new standards at sucking on the road, we can face our demons and get better. We need to get T shirts for our coaches and players that say "We suck on the road". Win a road game and you can take them off. Perhaps Ford and his players would be humiliated enough to go to work and fix the problems instead of just repeating them. Or should I saying relapsing.

Wow, XJK3026 or whatever your name is. You truly have no clue. Did Will have an off night shooting? Yes. But if you can't see everything else he brings to the floor than you have no hope and obviously have no true understanding of basketball. He plays the best help defense on the team, makes the correct extra pass and he seems to be a heck of a team mate. Does he have his limitations? Sure, just like every other player on the KSU team.

I've followed K State basketball for the past 4 years, watched them in person multiple times at the Sprint Center and a couple of weeks ago made the journey to the OoD for the first time, not to mention all the games I've viewed on television. Will is a good player, an opinion that I apparently share with not one but two Division 1 basketball coaches who have started him multiple times and allowed him to play extensive minutes for their basketball team. I read my son one of your posts about Will a couple of weeks ago and we had a great laugh about just how clueless you really are.

Wow. I am not exaggerating when i say this: THAT WAS THE MOST PATHETIC DISPLAY OF BASKETBALL I HAVE EVER SEEN.

We looked gutless, clueless, talentless and completely overmatched in EVERY aspect of the game.

I gotta say that while the players were pathetic, the coaching staff does not get a pass for this. they had a week to prepare the team for this game, and this is the product they delivered?

Coach K - completely out-coached. we are down 25 in catch up mode, and he is playing marshall, hairston and thornton? WTF? or maybe he just decided that it was over.

The assistants - I still believe that Wojo is a crap big man coach, and have been saying this for a really long time on this board. I dont know why Mason looked good at the beginning of the season, maybe he put in work on his own time, but sure enough, he has regressed to the mean under Wojo's fine tutelage. Remember how much potential and promise Amile is showing us right now??? Look for all that to change as he spends more time with our stellar big man coach. NONE OF OUR BIGS EVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING GOOD. It's always been that way under Wojo. Mason is a senior, McD with an NBA body and athleticism and he does not have a decent go to move. A bulk of his scoring comes from his athletic advantages. I'm resigned to the fact that we will continue to accept mediocre play in the post at this point. Could go on about this for days, but do not have the time, patience or inclination to go back and forth with the 'Wojopologists'.

Anyway, the players were abysmal today as well:

Cook - it saddens me to say this, but sometimes he looks like he doesn't give a ****. still our best hope at the point so i hope he gets his head straight. i can live with the poor shooting if he gets other people involved.

Curry - horrible day today, and the injury has rendered him less effective off the bounce. still he has been keeping us in games with his incredibly hot shooting, effectively putting a band-aid on everything that ails this team. today that band-aid came off and the other players were completely exposed.

Thornton - fights hard, but if we have to rely on him for extended minutes than we are toast. he might be the worst guard i have ever seen in a duke uniform. and for a defensive stopper, his man D is atrocious. larkin et al were crossing him over left and right.

Sulaimon - came to play... only about 30 minutes too late. where the eff was that fight when we needed it? how has this dude regressed so much? where is the sulaimon from november?

Murphy - K can you please give the dude more minutes now? a three guard line up that goes 5'11", 6'0" and 6'0" with no speed, or penetration ability is utterly useless, especially given our rebounding woes.

Jefferson - looks good, and looks promising for the future... can't wait to see what developmental trajectory he follows under wojo *rolls eyes*

Hairston - that four point swing where he mishandled a perfect pass should have been enough to keep him on the bench for the entire game. his confidence appears to be shot. wasnt this guy ranked pretty decent coming out of high school? #wojo strikes again

Mason - pathetic, gutless display by our "senior leader". the fact that his offensive game is so mechanical does not help. he is also good for 2-3 astoundingly stupid WTF moments a game, and at least 2-3 fumbled rebounds that go directly to the other team. let's please bury this NPOY talk before it gets even more embarrassing.

Marshall - do not have very high hopes for him, but then again i never do for any of our bigs #wojo

Kelly - given our decline since his injury, the man should be the number one pick in the draft lol

Talent is keeping them in the hunt, but ND and road games against teams that just don't think Pitt is that good will reveal what you cretins just refuse to accept. Dixon is not moving the program along. Four years ago, they could beat anyone. Three years ago they could play with anyone. Two years ago, they were capable but heading south. Note: During the second half a little kid ran onto the court as Baylor was dribbling it to the other side (not a fast break, just after turnover or OU made shot, don't remember which) with his daddy running right behind him. The ref immediately whistled the ball dead so that the little kid wouldn't get hurt. It was possibly the cutest moment of the season and they even let him back on court during a timeout to shoot on a fisher price goal. :)

The man who followed was an intern in charge of putting the dunk contest together. It is pretty much the greatest thing i have seen. You should have seen his mother's reaction.

It was the worst team Kansas has ever put on the floor...Since Dr. [James] Naismith was there. I think he had some bad teams and lost to the YMCA the first couple years.

I assess the whole game as, what's the right word? Futility? I don't know how to describe it. It was awful. Even as bad as it was, which it was horrendous ... Offensively, that is as bad as you can play. We got off to such a bad start, and obviously it got worse from there.

I heard they really got bad in the 80's, when by all accounts they believed they were morally superior to everyone, but especially OU. I might have covered this in the "OU-KSU memory" thread - when talking about the 1977 OU-KSU game at the LNC. But I did go to two OU-KSU games in Manhattan when I was a student - in 1978 and again in 1980. OU lost the one in '78 in overtime, no thanks to a shocking turnover by our best player that let the Cats tie it in regulation. OU then won in '79 up there, for the first time since 1948, but I had to miss that one (midweek game). But I did get up there in '80 to see OU win there again.

KSU thought so little of OU basketball that they never considered the possibility that OU would beat them again, at Ahearn - and a national publication wrote up K-State by basically awarding them the win before the game was played. And, my OU roommate had an argument with a KSU prof (who started it) about how KSU had more of a winning tradition in basketball than OU did in football (:rolleyes: ). I think the final of that game was 72-62, and I remember how freshman guard Bo Overton made a layup on a drive down the lane that went up and over the rim like a Slinky.

OU beat K-State the last six times they played when I was an OU undergrad. I think that boggled their collective minds at the time.

Good news is that OU pulled out with a big second half vs. the Aggettes today. Final was 80-61. Always good to pummel them in Bedlam, even if it's tiddlywinks.

It's too bad there were few, if any, OU basketball message boards in early 1993. When OU whipped OSU, in what was the last Bedlam game I've been able to see in person before I moved, the OU students really got after Bryant "Jethro" Reeves with signs and chants. Naturally, some bitter old Aggy lady called the talk shows and threw a fit because the students weren't ejected from the arena for that. All I could do was laugh.

I figure this is as good a place as any to mention the time I saw Rick Barnes at the Han$#@! HEB one night while shopping for groceries. This was 2003-2004 time, I don't remember exactly. He was in the string cheese section looking at the different offerings. I stood about ten feet away and just observed him, not really wanting to bother him. He spent five minutes looking over the different cheese options, reading the labels, holding a different brand in each hand and seeing which one weighed more. Like a crazy person inspecting everything alone, he eventually put them all back. He walked off in the opposite direction my shopping was taking me, and I didn't see him again. I figure he just left through the produce area, disappointed in the processed cheese section of the local HEB.

He benched the cheeses to prove a point.

Sometimes you can just look at a package of string cheese and know it won't give good effort on defense. It's better to go with the recycled garbage you had last night, because at least you know you can trust it.

This team is a $#@!ing train wreck. Watching our team is like watching womens hoops.....its goddamn painful to suffer through each game. We suck at fundamentals, have no shooters, and our post players are all projects. I think Myck comes back (primarily because I doubt he excites anyone in the NBA right now) but it won't make a $#@!ing bit of difference. Next years team will look the $#@!ing same. No way Barnes gets fired this year, but hopefully he is gone after next year.

I can tell you why this is sensitive to me. When I first started coaching was when this happened but I will NEVER Forget it.

The football team was horrible. I had no speed nothing. So when basketball started I NEVER expected them to be able to play basketball so well when they were horrible football players.

Sure nuff, I had never played basketball past Elementary School as I gave it up for football where my talent was. So I didn't know that game as much. One semester of basketball at Tech didn't get me to the level needed.

Well I got advise from varsity coach and did just as he said. Man could these kids play basketball. The difference was astounding to me.

In preseason we won EVERY tournament Title we entered despite my true lack of basketball IQ if you will.

Well the conference title we all knew would be between us and this other team. It worked out exactly that way. IT all came down to the final game at our gym. This other team did a certain strategy that most teams couldn't handle. Well with my varsity coach tips I taught all week how to handle it. I really drilled on it most of the practice time knowing if we couldn't handle that we couldn't beat them as they were as talented as we were.

In hindsight I am not sure if playing at home wasn't worse for the guys. They got so tight and played so poorly trying too hard. I tried to calm them down with multiple time outs.

At halftime in the locker room I asked what was it that was going wrong. I drilled em all with questions giving situations on what they were to do. They all knew it immediately. But for some reason playing in front of fans, family and friends they just froze.

I caught so much flak from parents etc as if I had never drilled or taught them how to handle what was thrown at them. Yet these people knew NOTHING of what they were talking about. My players even defended me saying Coach told us and taught us what to do but we just froze and didn't do as taught.

Even to this day, I wonder what I did wrong so that they played so poorly in that game and yet we had won so much and won 3 tournaments and yet this game they couldn't handle the pressure. I was as shocked as everyone else.

It still eats at me not knowing what I did wrong. But it makes me understand from being there how so many psuedo experts know so much yet never played or coached or understand so much and acting like they do.

I see bad coaching myself and can identify it. I have not seen that at all with this team. I put myself in his shoes and I realize he CW is doing a heck of a job with what he has to work with and position he is put in.

My problem is I feel way too often people that criticize him and the team really have no actual idea of all that is involved in coaching etc and never actually did it personally either.
Therefore they are acting like the "expert" they have no qualifications to do so.

We have seen TECH teams quit but this one in no way has quit or mailed it in by any stretch. The signs for that are not seen in this team no matter what is happening on the court if one gets real hot from 3's is nationally ranked and another team that gets fouls called so far out of whack but we still lose both. TECH didn't play worse so much in both games but they look different with same type effort. Had WV hit free throws the score would have looked terrible again but not indicating the team had quit.

This is a real pet peeve of mine. I mean the announcer acts like just doubling K would have solved our problems. Trust me when you try and stop one leak you open others. So a coach must pick his poison. And we were in the game so why open up where their shooting could get hot and bury us quickly. You give and take away with any strategy. But only players and coaching knows those particular fine points. Esp per game and its game plan.

What troubles me most is not the coach or the players. It's the demise of interest. I was at a shrimp boil with a bunch of TexAgs friends last night. Good fans, people who hold season football tickets, who live locally and go to basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball games. Who'll never have to apologize for their support if our athletics.

This game was in TV. Except for the groan of an occasional passerby as Vandy drove for yet another uncontested layup and drained uncontested threes from the corners, these folks essentially ignored this game. Nobody cared, because there's no longer an expectation of success in this sport.

Without a drastic change SOMEWHERE, even the best of your fans will stop going. It is my further belief that Billy Clyde Gillispie's return to A&M would be a Cinderella story for the ages, but this is - of course - not requisite to my argument.

Let me expand on my emotions a bit, perhaps my comment will be better understood. My wife ( born and raised a true blue KY fan ) has been converted over the last 2 decades to jumping up and down in the living room like many of us watching our beloved errs. So with that said, I keep bitchin about the B12 refs, and yes she does agree. However, she has made me understand that bottom line is that the team and yes, Huggy, have underperformed all year long! No growth, nothing! We have 4 talented recruits verbally committed. All big men with 3 being 3 stars and 1 a native 3 star. Hence, my point. I hope our showing this year does not change their mind like it did for a few top recruits in football this year

You watch, ISU will keep being pressured from outside forces to remain the bridesmaid but never the bride. People outside Cyclone Nation are ready to eat up our success because we are a good story, but only in the context of us "putting on a good show" for the likes of big money, big market traditional power programs. ISU is expected to keep giving a solid challenge to the big boys but never win, we are only supposed to "showcase" the big time programs, not BEAT them! This is all about the rich get richer, Wake Up Iowa! They want to keep you in your place, which is a challenging exhibition for the "real" big boys, and the powers-that-be will stop at nothing to keep us in our proper place. They tried to keep our success framed that way a decade ago and now they are doing the same thing.

I am not a Charles Barkley fan, but he gets it. That was the game. That was the money moment when we all knew that it was over. Referees were not going to blow a close game in our favor. Duh..... Wake Forest AD Ron Wellman reaffirmed his support for Jeff Bzdelik today. Talk about a meltdown on the Wake boards. He has very little support left within the fanbase, but has the support of Wellman, the school President, and the heaviest hitters on the BoT.

The Scout boards, which basically died off when they became an arm of the AD's office and tried to silence all the #BuzzOut talk, are not happy. The folks at ogboards.com, which were created from all the Scout fallout, are absolutely apoplectic. (note to anybody who may want to go over there-- ogboards is not censored in any way, so browse at your own risk).

Fanbase frustration with Buzz hit new highs at the end of this year when they took out an ad in the school newspaper demanding his firing. For a small school like Wake, this is a big deal and goes well beyond simply rocking the boat. There were then 4 ads placed on the 4 consecutive days of the ACC Tournament in the Greensboro newspaper that demanded Buzz be canned. Since then, the AD has tried to marginalize the group of BuzzOuters as some kind of lunatic fringe when they only speak for at least 90% of the fanbase. There have been specious claims about threats of violence against Bzdelik (a threat of violence at Wake basically consists of somebody threatening to put a For Sale sign in a yard and not following through with it). Threats about lawyers looking into options for retaliation. The problem is that none of that has any basis in fact, and threatening a largely disgruntled fanbase that consists largely of professionals and lawyers themselves really is just going to motivate them more. The next step the fanbase is gearing up for is the acquisition of billboards around town demanding that both Wellman and Buzz be fired.

Xavier finished 17-14 this year, lost in the first round of the A-10 tournament, and failed to make the postseason. So Wellman is citing a home win against a team that didn't even make the NIT as progress in Year Three. Splendid.

Just discussed this development with one of the few basketball season ticket holders I know--my bro-in-law--during which he went on a nice rant about this team, and mainly about how Rick Barnes has been "driving this goddamn garbage truck of a program into the landfill." Yea besides all the crapy play of Johnson he displayed the worst Sportmanship I have EVER seen in a KU player. Hitting a guy in the nuts! Sure we want to blame EJ and yeah he is 50% to blame but Self has got to take the other 50%. I say this because well of not coaching a double digit lead to a victory with less than 5 mins in the game. But also resting 2 started..Withey and Releford was jerked once in the first half and once in the 2nd half when we just got a 10 pt lead...Niether had foul trouble...leave them in and we could have stretched it to a 18-22 pt lead and Michigan would have gave up all hope.

No excuses for blowing this one....NONE WHAT SO EVER. This team had a chance to really do something...With all the youth coming in next year they wont have a chance to go as far in the tourney due to that fact. So we are looking at another 2-3 years for a truely deep run...Should have been this year and really for KU a Sweet 16 shouldnt be considered a deep run..

I thought the game started out way too physical, way too physical. I thought that all three of them, if they go past this round of officiating, it will be sad for the game.


I thought the two critical calls at the end of the game were really bad. Jordan Madden drives in the paint. We already have the missed shot. She calls an offensive foul on Madden right there. Well, why so late? Odyssey Sims had the rebound in her hand.

I can't believe the BG's Baylor career is over and only 1 national championship. Her freshman year the Lady Bears exceeded expectations and made it to the Final Four. The next 3 years the Lady Bears only met expectations 1 time IMO when they won the 2012 Nation Championship. Losing to aggie and this debacle are heart breaking.

bull ****... we have the equivalent of Oscar Robertson at point guard...this should be a Sweet 16 team without Grinner much less with her... and I'm not blaming Grinner...she was face guarded with a girl behind her every possession...not much anyone can do there... at some point the rest of the team have to act like players

Griner (thanks merky for the spell check... you are very special) got mugged early and often... it was more physical abuse than I've ever seen in a women's game... and almost none of it was called...including a hay-maker thrown by 4 that didn't connect... I thought the fat girl from Louisville that couldn't miss absolutely should have been T'd up when she jumped in BG's face after her circus shot and 1 (if AJ Walton had done that after a play he'd be trying to post bond right now) I thought the charge late might have been the right call, but not 5 seconds after it happened...I thought our defense with 9 seconds left was dumb and that our inbounds with 2.9 left really didn't give us much of a chance... I also thought that they were unconscious from 3...many with a hand up and many totally uncontested... I thought that we left way too many points out there once they took BG away... and I think that 1 NC with the best post player ever to play the game along with the best point in the NCAA today is just sad... This team should have had 3 and got 1...

I don't usually criticize posts or posters, but how many of you were at the game last night? I was. Geno, Pat, or Vince Lombardi would not have fared any better last night than Kim. What are you suppose to do....extend your defense to six feet beyond the 3-point line and let them have open shots from inside that? No one can be expected to make 3s like were made last night. It was beyond belief. People in the stands near me were laughing about it, it was so unreal. But it happened and we still only lost by 1.

Let's see.....ridiculous shooting, opponents best player mugged all night without penalty until it was too late, some of the meanest looking players (UL) I have seen in a while who barked at the refs after every foul call against them with no technical or warning, game completely uncontrolled by officials. Yeah, Geno and Pat would have done better.

People here just do not understand the parity and fine line present in sports. We could have still won the game with fewer turnovers and less missed FTs, but you shouldn't have to play perfect to win if the other factors you have little control over aren't stacked against you.

Geno's and Pat's dominance was at a time where the level of the remainder of the field was far lower than it is today. Don't assume they would have faired any better last night. What will you say if ND beats UConn for the fourth time?????? KM had the players' backs and we should have her's. People's criticism of her on this thread and others is sickening

Yes. Louisville gets a BOGUS charge call. Louisville coach complains. He gets T'd up. Baylor gets two technical foul shots to pull within 2 or 4 points.

Then Baylor gets the ball, misses a shot, Hayden takes hard down the lane and runs over a Cardinal player as she is passing out to her left. Refs call a valid charge although ESPN announcers were calling it a flop. I know a flop. Chelsea Popplens can flop. That was a charge.

Mulkey goes nuts. No technical. I guess because she wasn't able to undress all the way. Her jacket was so tight she couldn't fling it off. That part was kind of funny.

Sportscenter has voted. 30 minutes into tonights show, they have covered facial hair, ncaa dunk contests, and three segments on player abuse at Rutgers. In all that time, they haven't said **** about Baylor winning the freaking NIT Championship. Unbelievable.

I think we should shoot for the NIT every year. If it looks like we're gonna make the NCAA then we should throw a few games so we can get in the NIT and hopefully make it to the championship again
