View Full Version : A really bad start to 2013 in Tulsa homicide-wise

Not sure if y'all have heard, but we had four more homicides today at the same apartment. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/specialprojects/news/crimewatch/article.aspx?subjectid=450&articleid=20130107_450_0_Fuoeee765756)

Our first homicide of the year was Friday. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/specialprojects/news/crimewatch/article.aspx?subjectid=11&articleid=20130105_450_0_Tulsap281603)

We only had 46 (http://www.tulsaworld.com/specialprojects/news/crimewatch/article.aspx?subjectid=450&articleid=20130102_11_A1_ULNSus786550) in all of 2012.

Anyways, hug your family and friends a lot. Life is precious and short. Even if it doesn't involve children at an elementary school or a movie theatre, tragic situations here :(

Hadn't seen that Badg - wow, that area is getting off to a really bad start.

I live really close to the apartments in question - the thing that makes my neighborhood safe is:

1- No outlet streets. You can't just drive through our neighborhood to get to another area.
2- Old people watch the neighborhood. Retirees are actually quite useful!
3- Dogs. There are a lot of families with dogs in the neighborhood.
4- Police car. One of the two exit-enter streets is right next to where a cop lives. He parks his cop car in the street, so it's one of the first things you see when you enter the neighborhood.

I feel safe, but I also regularly drive by those apartments and neighboring ones. There's road construction going on in the area, plus there's hardly any walkways despite a large amount of foot traffic. It's mostly older or boarded up shops in the area. It's kind of sad. I think the residents would take care of the area if the city had any pride in it.

Unfortunately 61st & Peoria shows up on the same highlighted maps as 31st & Garnett, 36th St. N and (you pick).

sounds like he sure was helpful with the cops

Also, I was mistaken --- we already had two homicides before this, but the second was a delayed one. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=298&articleid=20130107_298_0_Ayearo959746)

Assuming that it doesn't turn out to be murder-suicide and all four are homicides, Tulsa is already up to 6, just short of a homicide a day. :(

EDIT: Still not as bad as Detroit in 2012 (http://news.yahoo.com/detroit-reports-highest-homicide-rate-in-20-years-192557311.html)

What is it you want the city to do to have pride in it?

If you're not involved with drugs in some way your chances of being murdered are pretty low, even in Tulsa or Detroit.

Things get worse before they get better, I guess, because Tulsa had its SEVENTH homicide of the year on Monday (which was the fifth of the day, yes). Link (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=11&articleid=20130107_11_0_Amanwa500121)

What is it you want the city to do to have pride in it?

The city has recently tried to get voter support for initiatives to improve the airport and the AA facilities under the guise that it would save Tulsa jobs. They held public meetings so that people could get their support groups to take over the microphones to demand more funding for the zoo. The vote was shoved down our throats in a short period of time, so it got a resounding "NO" from voters.

In a nutshell, they put more effort into a losing ballot initiative than into make that heavy foot traffic area of town more walkable.

That was a County initiative, not a proposal from the City.

That area of town is not going to be anywhere you want to walk until they demolish that apartment building and those low income apartments nearby. I suppose you could devote more cops to it but they would tell you more officers are needed and if more officers are needed, it would need to be paid from existing sales taxes somehow.

Yes, county. My bad. I have mistaken a-many county initiatives with city, because they all seem to be located in Tulsa specifically. "Their River No" lol :D

Odds are that area's going to go into hiding for a bit since they've got the Eye of Sauron glued in their direction now after a quadruple homicide.

However, longterm, hopefully part of the streets package to get a faster route to Southern Hills (at least that's what I assume they're doing) is getting sidewalks and lighting installed as well in that area.

That area needs a bulldozer renovation. Tulsa has become a place where people do not want to live except at the high end.

the thing that makes my neighborhood safe is:

1- Lots of rich white folk and...
2- No minorities

Not really, there's quite a few minorities in our neighborhood and I don't think our houses are big enough (a lot of one-car garages and small lots) to qualify as "rich." Rich people live in Jenks :)

Also, you're not going to believe this, so I have to cite it (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=298&articleid=20130109_298_0_Amanac719872): Tulsa had its EIGHTH homicide last night. They already made an arrest. It was a stabby fatal

No homicides yesterday, but I read somewhere that Lawton got their first homicide of the year. Man... we're worse than Lawton. :(

It's still early in the year. I expect Lawton to make a run towards the end of the first quarter.

They need to ban knives that look like military assault knives.
