Bowl Championship Series

The MAC champion will receive an automatic berth in one of the five BCS bowl games if they are the highest ranked non-automatic qualifying conference champion and either of the following:
Ranked in the top 12 of the BCS Rankings.
Ranked in the top 16 of the BCS Rankings and its ranking is higher than that of an automatic qualifying conference champion.

In 2012, Northern Illinois became the first MAC team to receive a BCS bowl berth, qualifying by the second criterion. The Huskies were ranked 15th in the final BCS standings, higher than two champions of AQ conferences (Big East champion Louisville, who's ranked 22nd, and Big Ten champion Wisconsin, who's unranked). Northern Illinois will play Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

How many million$ did we lose by not being in a BCS game?...I'm ready to scrap the BCS and start the playoff system.

Why is it that(again) the Cotton Bowl got de-selected as a major bowl, and the Fiesta got added? How again did the Big 12 get affiliated with the Fiesta instead of the Orange?

I said that way back when the bowls were announced.

As a Sooner fan, that game will always have a certain level of pain associated with it, however, it wasn't as if Boise had just started playing football. They were new-ish to D1, but had won championships in D2. History also proved that Boise State wasn't a flash in the pan, and that they had staying power.

If FSU loses to NIU, they will take the top spot on the list-o-shame. Not only did FIU squeak into the game, beating absolutely nobody along the way, it's in FSU's backyard. The all time "uh-oh" still belongs to Michigan, for their loss to App State, but an FSU loss here would knock us down a notch on that list.

You are right TU, it will eventually be forgotten...but I'll be long dead by the time that happens. Everytime Boise plays in a meaningful game, you'll see the replay of the Statue of Liberty. Everytime there's a mention of the BCS (after it turns into the playoffs) you'll see that same video as they talk about the unpredictable games and excitement. Boise State's arrival to D1 and their arrival as a real football program are forever attached to that win in Glendale. When all of those things have settled down, it'll be forgotten. Hell, I'll just be happy if I can make it through a year without seeing that damn plan (I think I saw it twice this season). That would be a good start.

Of course the rules have to be followed. What I was saying is that the rules exist because of lawsuit threats several years ago. The BCS conferences gave a bit to avoid antitrust lawsuits from the mid-majors.

3. The champion of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, or the Western Athletic Conference will earn an automatic berth in a BCS bowl game if either:

**A. Such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings, or,
**B. Such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.

No more than one such team from Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference shall earn an automatic berth in any year. (Note: a second team may be eligible for at-large eligibility as noted below.) If two or more teams from those conferences satisfy the provisions for an automatic berth, then the team with the highest finish in the final BCS Standings will receive the automatic berth, and the remaining team or teams will be considered for at-large selection if it meets the criteria.

Orange Bowl rep to NIU: We didn't even want you here
By Bruce Feldman | Senior College Football Columnist
January 1, 2013 3:41 pm ET

As if Northern Illinois didn't need any added motivation for its match-up against Florida State on Tuesday night in Miami, the Huskies got a little more. And it comes from an unlikely place: a rant from an Orange Bowl representative to an NIU staffer.

“You guys [NIU] don't even deserve to be here,” the Orange Bowl rep said to the NIU staffer. “We didn't even want you here.”

According to a source, the exchange took place the other night in a hospitality suite. The Orange Bowl rep had compared NIU to Duke, the source said, and the NIU rep responded by pointing out that the Huskies, who are riding a 12-game winning streak, have been to bowl games in five consecutive seasons. The conversation escalated from there, the source said.

The 12-1 Huskies' presence in the Orange Bowl has been a sore subject for many from the moment when the BCS Bowl pairings were announced in early December. ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit even called it “a joke” that the Huskies were invited to play in the Orange Bowl. One NIU player responded by heaving an orange at the TV after hearing Herbstreit's comments.

Florida State, which earlier this season did lose to an unranked NC State team, is a 14-point favorite.

The biggest losers in this year's BCS selection was the BCS bowls themselves. We missed out on a few $$ that we would have to split anyway, but the Orange bowl got a bad game. I expect the Sugar Bowl to be even worse. The Cotton bowl was a big winner in all this.

hmmm....what if there were a provision in the BCS formula that states: An invitation to a BCS bowl for a team from one of the Peon Leagues will only be considered if said peon team avgs 40,000 in home attendance. Or would that be a further snub to the have-nots?

There were multiple thousands of empty seats in the OB tonight.
