I know they had a mass shooting in a Luby's cafeteria several years but none since concealed carry was passed that I can recall.

it has been suggested for oklahoma too. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=336&articleid=20121218_16_A8_CUTLIN405508)

while it might sound like a bad idea to have more guns in order to prevent gun violence in schools, i am thinking back to when i heard that some tiny school districts require sports coaches to also be able to drive buses (so that they can both coach and drive their team to the game/event, saving districts money).

what we have is a situation in public funding that disallows for schools to have both police officers and teachers in classrooms. So, like combining coaching and bus driving, we're seeing texas combine teaching and protection.

I would rather Teachers Carry than the Kids be so scared they bring one themselves and then become Criminals because they have No faith in the authorities to protect them

I cant even imagine what this Kid was really thinking other than If They wont I will.

What a sad deal. Made sadder by the fact that a scared kid had to be treated like a criminal just because he was scared.

Over the 200+ years of our country, haven't we abdicated our personal protection to the government enough???

It's time for the citizens to stand up and take personal responsibility for their protection, and the protection of others.
Especially when law enforcement has shown itself to be numerically incapable of being everywhere.

Now that we have seen that the growth of government in all areas....... being as big as we can possibly pay for....there cannot be enough police!
How can the responsible citizen do anything other than be responsible for their own protection as the only alternative?

I really can only speak to higher ed since I've never taught at another level. Depression rates are much higher among graduate students than the general population and this doesn't just go away once they graduate and take jobs as professors.

Studies have found that graduate school is not a particularly healthy place. At the University of California at Berkeley, 67 percent of graduate students said they had felt hopeless at least once in the last year; 54 percent felt so depressed they had a hard time functioning; and nearly 10 percent said they had considered suicide, a 2004 survey found. By comparison, an estimated 9.5 percent of American adults suffer from depressive disorders in a given year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

For those who want to dismiss Berkeley as a haven for out of touch weirdos, I don't disagree with you (There was a parade for the Church of the Rainbow Frog outside of my hotel when I was there for a conference). However, I can tell you that those numbers aren't far off from what I have seen firsthand at OU and later at Loyola Univ. Chicago for my PhD. People have said I must not think much of my colleagues. Well, I don't when it comes to handling firearms. I'd rather some didn't handle scissors.

Rigorous training and mental health screenings might ease my concerns on that, but it is just something I have trouble getting past. I like the idea in theory (instant response time to an active shooter) but I think there are some obstacles that need to be seriously considered.

Can you believe it's been over 20 years since the Luby's shooting? I had forgotten about that.

as a teacher, in ele ed. I'd be more than willing to CC at school. I'm going through CC from a friend of mine that is very prudent and serious. It's more about self-defense. He teaches it all in Manhattan. It's just not about this and that about a gun so you can carry. It's a huge responsibility and honestly it sometimes worries me. BUT if I train, and shoot regularly I have no doubt I will be prepared. I feel prepared now to protect my house and family. Not wanting to trying to be a hero. I honestly think if there is CC at schools these COWARDS would be less apt to attack.

So let me ask those against, this is a relatively simple answer (no way ALL the guns can be taken or not much of a guarantee even more gun laws would work) IF it saves JUST ONE life isn't that GOOD ENOUGH?

I KNOW you will not see every teacher doing it, and honestly I believe in MORE training than a CC class. BUT it can be done.

Yes, it would be worth it. It also could create a tragedy if the gun is stolen or held by someone who is unqualified. I think the idea makes sense, but like you feel that much more training that a CC class would be necessary for me to be comfortable with it. I'm not saying that you need to send teachers who want to carry to boot camp, but they need immersive, intense training in scenarios where they might have to use that weapon.

This IS what an intelligent and thoughtful citizen should say.
