And of course Chizik is gone at Bama Aggy. They're also facing new NCAA scrutiny, so "dumpster fire" is an understatement. More like a landfill conflagration on The Plains.

I checked out every rumor I could find --- no imminent firings in the works other than Purdue at the moment, reportedly.

Stay tuned...

I think UT is too "high and mighty" to take someone while they still have an NCAA "taint" on them, even as an assistant. Chizik is probably going to have to do a similar redemption tour through a mid-major unless he get the "just cause" tag slapped on him by the NCAA.

CU has a football team? I thought they dropped football after leaving for the Pac-12. When I saw that Utah or Oregon or whoever beat "COLO" by 50 points week after week I just assumed it was this Colorado (http://www.coloradocollege.edu/).

That surprises me, not cuz of the losses, but cuz i read that the utah win this weekend saved jon and that he could get away with just ousting assistants and get another year coaching the beefaloes. Guess not.

Ive also checked up on rumors on june jones (smu), skip holtz (usf) and ruffie mcneill (ecu, but yall may remember him as leach's HUGE assistant at tech). They all have been rumored to have hot seats, but didnt see anything definite on ousters for them.

There were tons others but didnt find anything of substance.

I think with the year we had, our coaches are all safe from poaching and from firing... good but not spectacular season. The programs that have been consistently good, however, are gonna have to up salaries or see exoduses. Think anyone major gives frank solich another chance? I think nebraska didnt suck as much as their ex-ad suggested... i think nebraska is just never going to be what it once was under dr ozzie

It might have helped him if CU would have won.....instead they lost a closer game than most of them this season. This was the first time they have not won a home game in a season, their only win was against CSU at Mile High.

CSU went 4-8 with first year coach Jim McElwain. Air Force went 6-6, not a great season for college football here on the Front Range.

I doubt June Jones will be going anywhere. Back in 2010, he signed a contract extension through 2014. SMU didn't have a stellar year this year. See how it goes next year though.

I got to go to an SMU game this year. When they played Sam Houston State. It was a blow out. Gilbert did not impress. But it seemed everyone loves JJ. If they have a good season next year. He may stick around a while.

Things that amuse me,
I wonder where Todd Graham's dream job is this year ;)
How sad is it that right now staying at Miss. St. or Ole Miss is more desirable than coaching at Tenn. or Auburn.
Petrino will probably be the top choice for Auburn, although, he's allegedly in Tennessee's top three candidates as well.
Arky fan thinks they will get Chris Petersen to leave his empire in Boise.
Tennessee seems to be putting all of their eggs in the Gruden basket.

Someone to keep an eye on as a potential for the SEC jobs may actually be Jeff Tedford. He got jobbed by Cal hardcore, and will be successful elsewhere.

Cal's Tedford is the hot rumor for CU around here, he has a $6.9 million buyout for not coaching this year, any salary made will be deducted from that. Others rumored to be interested are Fresno State's Tim DeRuyter and Colorado School of Mines Bob Stitt.

Yeah. NYTimes did a story on it here. (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/06/sports/ncaafootball/florida-international-fires-football-coach-mario-cristobal.html?_r=0)

Remember WVU's bball coach Huggie when he left K-State? He was beloved, he was winning, but he knew exactly what the coaching profession entailed when he tried to stay loyal to Cincy and they fired him at the first sign of losing.

Mario tried to be loyal to FIU and they fired him after 3-9 season.

Guess they didn't really mind being known as F_U with FAU in the Bottom 10, because that's where they're headed back to now.

How do you feel about players and fans?

"I was telling somebody the other day we've looked at writing a book called, You People Are Freaking Nuts: Life from Inside the Fishbowl."

"I still stand in amazement that anybody would dare to want my husband's autograph. I mean seriously, why?"

On Lou Holtz:

"I kept saying he has a lisp or something, there's something going on with his mouth. I can't understand what he's saying, and Gus was like 'shut up.' "

On the 2010 BCS National Championship:

"(mockingly) The offensive showdown. Whoa! 22 points. Wow. 22 points really, that's what happened. Are you serious? That was our conversation."

On Cam Newton:

Bielema didn't tell Alvarez, because he apparently contacted Arky back in September about the job. I read something yesterday in the Milwaukee paper (I think) that Bielema left Wiskey because they wouldn't pay his assistant coaches enough to keep them, and he was tired of losing them. Seems like he was quoted in that article that Wiskey was paying their coordinators about 225K each. The Pigs gave him enough money on top of his coaching salary to pay his assistant coaches more so he could keep them. Obviously, there was some friction there between Bielema and Alvarez over the FB coaching staff salaries, according to the article.
Also, I heard that Butch Jones turned CU down because he was being interviewed for both the Wisconsin and Tennessee jobs

badger

Football salaries are out of control, especially considering that football programs in general lose money. The mighty Midwest is losing population and with it, butts for seats to fill (and wallets to pay seat premiums and donor charges), so the B1G has to be at least a bit concerned about its bottom line.

If the Big 12 is looking to expand, they should try to poach the B1G. The future of this country and in football is NOT up in the freezing north where jobs and people are fleeing, along with political clout and tax dollars. It's right here (and in the SEC, of course). I bet Iowa State wouldn't mind having Iowa as an in-conference foe. We could drag Nebraska back to Texas kicking and screaming if necessary

Saban to the Browns?

http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-georgia-sports/2012/12/11/report-cleveland-browns-lure-saban-back-to-nfl/

Alabama’s Nick Saban could become the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, the Boston Globe is reporting.

It’s far from a done deal, and a number of pieces would have to fall into place, but the Globe said on Monday that if the Browns hire Michael Lombardi as general manager as rumored, the door could be open to bringing in Saban as head coach. Saban and Lombardi, who is currently an analyst for the NFL Network, worked together for the Cleveland Browns in the early ’90s, where Saban was defensive coordinator and Lombardi was player personnel director.

According to the Globe, “Saban has let it be known that if he returns to the NFL — where he flopped, going 15-17 with the Dolphins from 2005-06 — it would likely be with Lombardi playing Scott Pioli to his Bill Belichick.” Pioli and Belichick are the GM-coach tandem who created a New England Patriots dynasty.

The Browns are suffering through another woeful season at 5-8 and have had only two winning seasons since 1999.

Owner Jimmy Haslam might have more than one reason for luring Saban to the NFL: He’s a prominent University of Tennessee booster, and the Vols are 0-6 against Saban’s Alabama teams.

For his part, Saban has already won two national championships at Alabama (and one at LSU) and will be going for another one on Jan. 7 against Notre Dame. With no mountains left to climb in the college game, could Saban be looking for another shot at the NFL?

yeah but with the way ESPN was going nuts with Mrs. Saban's phone call in about ole Nick not enjoying wins at all anymore, and just being relieved about them, this dog is going to grow some pretty long legs until the Browns hire a new coach.

Watched quiet a few SJDU late games this year, and he had a scrappy bunch. He's an 'in your face', 'I tell it like I see it' kind of coach. He's walking into a situation where the facilities and level of support is better than where he came from, so he'll probably be pretty pumped at first. Once he realizes that all of that stuff is nothing in comparison to the rest of the PAC, he'll realize why he's going to have to work his *** of tom resurrect that program.

The expectations going in couldn't be lower. I talked to a long time fan (not many of those left) and he said most fans were upset that Embree got so little time. I suspect this guy will have more time to get things done due to those 2 factors. If he can just produce a scrappy team that wins their OOC games and gets out of the pac12 cellar, he would be considered a success.

The ones that I know were ecstatic that Embree was gone, when you start losing games the way they did this season, you tend to lose the faithful no matter where you went to school. Last season they lost games by 20-28, this year by 60+ points, that is a program going in the wrong direction.

Kingsbury is a very interesting hire. I don't think it's a good choice but I think that only because of his age and apparent lack of gravitas. He does have the "street cred" of having played at the school and of coaching up the legend in College Station.

On a side note, when I briefly attended Texas Tech in the mid 80's (during my seven years as a college sophomore and just one of my five college locations), the head coach was Jerry Moore. The teams was so bad that they were often called "Jerry's Kids." (Probably dating myself with that reference to the Jerry Lewis telethon). That is the same Jerry Moore that retired this year as the Appalachian State coach.

It's Texas Tech. So what if they're adopting the oSu model. In order to have any sustained success at all, you've got to know you can keep a guy there. If it doesn't work out, oh well... it's only Texas Tech. No matter how much the mid-majors have improved their stock, they're still not as attractive as places like OU, Bama, Tejas, ND, etc. as far as knowing you can keep a guy there goes (sleaze balls like Kiffin and morons like Franchione don't count).

Georgia State hired Trent Miles back on Dec. 5. (http://www.georgiastatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=12700&ATCLID=205819928)

Trent Miles himself already had a job at Indiana State, so that opened when he left. They already hired Mike Sanford, who was fired by UNLV back in 2009.

Kent State hired Paul Haynes, a longtime tOSU assistant and Kent State alum. It was announced last night.

San Jose hired University of San Diego's Ron Caragher Monday. Fortunately, San Diego doesn't appear to be an FBS program, so I am going to ignore that vacancy.

Temple hired Matt Rhule, a NYG assistant. He was introduced Monday.

Western Michigan beat Tech for having the youngest head coach. PJ Fleck is 32 years old (Kliff is 33).

So, we have three openings left, and strong rumors suggest Utah State's guy is going to Wisconsin. Stay tuned!

He's also one of the few D-1 football coaches in college to not be married or at least have a family. It's a dangerous road to take, not making friends at a program. Making friends has saved Mack Brown's job in this era of 5-7, mid-tier bowls and no Big 12 titles (let alone national titles). So long as Chip wins he is safe (because I think Mr. Nike is on his side still), but if he's not competing for national/Pac 12 titles for even a season, the boosters will want him out and a coach they can own

Nike is on his side still), but if he's not competing for national/Pac 12 titles for even a season, the boosters will want him out and a coach they can own
That is one reason why I think he might head to the NFL where the focus is pretty much only on football and satisfying one person, the owner and in the NFL family seems to get in the way. Even though Oregon has an owner to satisfy, there are still underlings to placate. He always knows that he can go Saban/Petrino and head back to college if he fails in the NFL.

No, Chip Kelly will be getting the eff out of Dodge before the probation hits.

Coming from someone that now knows what Oregon does, wouldn't be surprised. What Oregon is doing is definitely against the spirit of the rules, but they're getting away on a technicality. Definitely interested to see what the NCAA does about it. Not hard to figure it out when you start looking for it.

Welcome to Black Monday. Because of the college implications, I have added NFL firings to this thread. You can see the updated list on the first page (complete with the college coaching changes) or here's the ones I just put up:

NFL FIRINGS
Chicago Bears: Lovie Smith
Philly Eagles: Andy Reid
KC Chiefs Romeo Crennel
Buffalo Bills Chan Gailey
SD Chargers Norv Turner
Cleveland Browns Pat Shurmur

Apparently whisenhunt was fired as well. Seen it on the ESPN scroll. I didn't think Lovie was on the hot seat. Well I guess the musical chairs will begin. I hope the Eagles don't hire a retread.

I wasn't. They went from playing in a Super Bowl to not even making the playoffs. Had a feeling he was gone.

Like the SEC, success from nearby rivals/teams breeds jealousy.

The Vikings are 9 yards short a record and making the playoffs while giving Favre a last shot, the Packers are going 15-1 last season with the MVP and winning the Super Bowl the year before that... and what have da Bears done lately? About as much as the Lions, which is soooooo pathetic :D

Update en masse! I'm checking on all the ones I still had as open:

Florida A&M: Still nobody hired, but three finalists named. (http://www.tallahassee.com/story/2013130103013/FAMU-tabs-3-finalists-football-coaching-job)

FIU: Ron Turner (http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8811661/ron-turner-hired-florida-international-golden-panthers-coach). He was the Bucs QB coach.

Nevada: Reports are Brian Polian (http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/bruce-feldman/21503001/brian-polian-expected-to-be-next-nevada-head-coach), who is Aggroid's special teams coach. Not official yet, so not gonna add yet.

NIU: I guess I just missed that they upgraded Ron Carey (http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2012/12/2/3719940/northern-illinois-huskies-rod-carey-bcs-2012). There ya go.

Buffalo Bills/Syracuse: Doug Marrone is going to Beefalo Bills (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/06/bills-hire-syracuse-coach-doug-marrone/related/), so that's now open. I'll add it to the list (and put that with Beefalo)

KC Chefs: Andy Reid. (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8812387/andy-reid-reaches-agreement-next-coach-kansas-city-chiefs)

OK, so the list on the first page is updated, I think. Please post here (and provide links if you can) if you hear any other updates.

A few new ones to add since my last posting: The Jaguars' new GM fired their one-season coach and the Browns have a new coach. To my knowledge, no new coaching developments in college football or NFL, as far as head coaches go.

I will update the list on the first post with these changes

Money talks, losing causes them to walk :)

I'll check the first page list openings now to see if there's any developments. LOL at reports that Hoodie interviewed with Philly Eggo

EDIT: The NFL openings are still open, but FAMU, Cuse and Nevada all have coaches now. Looks like there's no college openings left (although the NFL could change that)

Well, it IS New Mexico STATE! I think I'd rather be a defensive backs coach for OU than be a head coach at New Mexico STATE!!! :glee:

Is his dad ever going to return to coaching? I don't fault him for exiting the Colorado job search early. That place is just asking for doom
