Oklahoma #2 in % of interracial marriages

Just ran across this chart (Washington Post story linked, but doesn't talk about comparative states). The Sooner State apparently is second only to Hawaii in the percent of "intermarriages" out of total marriages.

And if I'm reading the bar graph correctly, the majority of those marriages aren't white/Hispanic, white/Asian or white/Black. Guess the number of white/werewolf marriages in the Tulsa area really tips the scale.

not a big fan of how the graph was constructed, with the proportional types of intermarraiges laid out like that.

Hawaii has a higher overall percentage of white/hispanic intermarriages than does vermont, but vermont's white/hispanic bar is way longer.

12% of 42.4% = 5% of Hawaii marriages are white/hispanic

60% of 4% = 2.4% of Vermont marriages are white/hispanic

SJS, I agree that the graph is poorly constructed. Took me awhile to figure out that all bars add up to 100%, with the neutral "other intermarriage types" color filling out the remaining % in each case.

I remember reading an anthro study back in college about endogamy vs. exogamy (marrying inside vs. marrying outside one's racial group/tribe/clan/nationality, etc). Apparently the majority marries inside it's group. Some indication is that this is partially just happenstance. When the hormones tell you it's time, you hook up with whoever's handy. But when comparing those who would not marry if a partner from within the group was not available vs. those who would not marry if a partner from outside the group was not available, there was a heavy bias in favor of exogamy. Something like 4:1 if memory serves.
The assumption at the time was that this was gene-driven behaviour and was a way to promote genetic diversity in the population.

Now, the extra twist was that, in comparing immigrants to those who stayed in their homelands, the bias in favor of exogamy roughly doubled.

Oklahoma and Hawaii having large majorities of people who moved there in the past hundred years would seem to support that data.

Those with the cojones to go try to find a better life are also more likely to marry outside their group.

Might we conclude that mixed race couples are probably composed of people who tend to be aggressive, self-reliant, brave, adventurous, take the bull by the horns self starters? The data might well support such a conclusion.

My first wife was Italian/Irish. Right down the middle. Her grandparents on both sides were 1st generation immigrants. That bitch was/is the most emotional wreck of a person I've ever had the displeasure to associate with. She started fights just so we could make up. Twisted yainch. I quit going to her family's house after one Christmas. They hug, start drinking, then start fighting. I mean serious fighting. Shoes thrown and ****. Insults like "you cannot talk to your mutha that way!" "why not, you're a terrible mutha!!" "How dare you talk to your mutha that way....WHACK!!" With a shoe.

She only came to my parents' house on one Thanksgiving. She said "how can you stand it here? Your family has no passion. No love." I go "you are one sick bitch." The marriage was 10 years of pure hell.

Anyhow, IDGAS who you marry or mate with. Just think about your offspring and what kinda **** they have to put up with. Little caramel babies used to have it rough. Nowadays? Not so much. Look no further than Blake/Kenny Stills/etc.

It was confusing for many years. Sometimes, I got so bumfuzzled I didn't drink at all. Other times, I'd wake up in the front yard with 2 inches of snow covering my face and be all afeared that I'd finally done it and gone blind from drinking all of it together.

Then I finally got right with life and just concentrated on bourbon. Expensive bourbon when I am drinking with friends; cheap crap when it's just me and the dog watching sports on teevee.
