When in the Navy one of my superiors, a Lt. Commander got involved with his E-5 secretary chick, and she was a sexy little nugget, but man they absolutely hammered that guy. I'll never forget the command CO, a Captain, storming into the comm center to send a message to DC, that they get the Lt. Cdr. off his base as fast as humanly possible.

I think both women, plus the "shirtless" FBI guy are ALL after
their 15 minutes of fame. It is a shame that two highly regarded,
decorated upper echelon military men fell victim to flirtacious stalkers.
Clearly, Broadwell is self serving and Kelly, as a 'bored socialite',
(not my words, the media) saw an opportunity. The FBI guy is a
horny a**hole that should be cashiered, not protected by any
whistleblower act. He was just hot after Kelly.

Patreaus and Allen both thought with the wrong brain and, for that,
our military/security agency loses out. Not making excuses, just
really ticked that the country loses out. Just my opinion...

People who completely let themselves go usually have inner turmoil going on that causes the external changes. It might be depression, mental illness, or a lifetime of abuse, a tragedy, etc..... but there is something that instigates it.
If so, then I think its the responsibility of both spouses to get the proper support and/or counseling to get to the bottom of the problem. If all measures have been taken by the non-letting-themselves-go spouse to try to help the other spouse, then they need to do what they feel is in the best interests for themselves and their family. This may sound harsh, but a person whose self-esteem has bottomed out to the point where they are letting their physical appearance go to crap is more than likely bringing many other unpleasant issues into the marriage. So many people think that once they're married, the game is over and they don't have to try anymore. Sad.

That being said, do we know if she was attractive as a young woman? Maybe she's just an older version of her unattractive younger self and nothing changed. If that's the case, then he knew what he was marrying and it shouldn't have been a big deal to him and its inexcuseable to go for a physically more attractive person.
