OU - NU 1971

Game of the Century, and it has held up to that lofty moniker. Conference and National title on the line, #1, #2. The whole deal.
It helped that it lived up to the hype.
Crap crap crap, we just needed the ball one more time!

ps; It gets my vote because I was there for it and I won't be for this one! lol

It's hard to say the most important, though it's hard to tell the the complete ramifications of this game right now, but there is certainly more buzz on a national level then I think anybody anticipated.

The 2007 game with Mizzou was the first time that I took my daughter to an OU game in Norman.

P.S. The Sooners are 9 and 0 in games I've taken my daughter to.

But the OU home game I will always remember the most was the 1971 Game of the Century. Number One (and defending National Champion) vs. Number Two.

The game had been hyped since at least midway through the season and I've never seen anything like it since. The anticipation beforehand that is.

I watched that game at my Aunt Loretta's house after Thanksgiving dinner and there wasn't an empty seat in that living room.

This one feels more fun to me vs. life & death (i.e. orange teams). But I don't share the ND hate that so many others proudly display here. I want Saturday to get here!

Yep, our odds of making the title game are slim while I think ND would be in the title if they win out (but they won't :P ). If only...

It's big for Notre Dame, as this will be their signature win of the season (that they won't get). For us... it would have been had K-State not Snydered us :(

A win would keep alive our chances of making the title game if other teams falter - some folks require that possibility for life to have meaning ;)

A top 5 finish and a nice BCS bowl are still very much on the table, but this isn't a game of even this short century.

This is the biggest game since Tech in '08, no question. I don't think it's quite as big as that one (as it was a national title playoff game). This one has similar implications, so it's close. The only way this game could be bigger, is if both teams came in undefeated, and/or ranked #1/#2...that would have 'game of the century' type hype.

I think we got Snydered as well.....but over 80,000 fans seem to think it was all LJ's fault.

Good point IMO.

it was 85 in norman,i was sitting 2 rows up from were troy stepped out of bounds. only if jerome brown hadnt broken his leg that day i think we would have beaten them. i have only been to 2 games they have lost at home.

i think the 71 game is the biggest ever, soo much build up,cover of sports illustrated, and a great game that lived up to all the hype, 2 seemingly unbeatable teams colliding and one had to lose, but the 2 itans remained #1 and #2 in the final polls.

second has to be the 2000 Neb game, after the horrible 90's and being at our worst, the miracle year of 2000 happened, clawing up to #2 in the polls and beating 2 top ten teams the sooners faced #1 Nebraska,it was electric stadium was jammed and rockin, even after being down 14-0 the sooners dominated the last 3 quarters to win. i saw tickets goin for 3k a pair before the game.

i was at the tech game in 08 and it was awesome but tech was nowhere near a national power as OU,Neb, or Notre Dame is

Saturday night is gonna be special!!

If its not the biggest, its sure in the hell one of the biggest in terms of our season, our recruiting, the amount of media attention, the vast number of alumni attending, and in the total impact the outcome of the game will have on us.

'00 KSU was still in Manhattan. ;)

Heupel said in his book that it was the loudest stadium he'd ever been in that day. Hopefully we can give him a bit different outlook this Saturday.

Not even close. It's a good game that's getting a lot of deserved hype, but it doesn't have near the auora of the 70-80's Nebbish clashes.

I can't fathom what it would have been like back in '71 if there had been the media machines that we have today.

SCS,

I agree, but would add that the results of this game led directly to OU winning MNC #6. We were not going to win a title that year with Troy at the helm. It was the introduction of Jamelle and the explosiveness of his offense that swayed the pollsters to move us back into MNC contention. Once TN took UM back behind the woodshed in the Sugar Bowl, the script was complete.

That's why I said in retrospect. At the time of the game, there really wasn't much history between the 2 teams aside from Helmet Head having been an assistant at OU & HC @ OSU.

It was a clip they called and it was way down field,i think the Neb guy ran in front of our guy and made it happen, long ways from sims too,he had no chance to catch him. Billy should have had well over 300 yards that day against a great Neb defense.

the long one he broke late he ran over one of their lineman. and that was a SWEET pass JC hit Valora with in the 3rd.
