View Full Version : Would you ever call Coach Stoops "Bobby"

Shouldn't that be reserved for people who knew him 'back in the day' so to speak? I can understand people who knew him when he was younger doing that, or his close friends, family, guys who played ball with him, coached him, and maybe former teachers. Other people like us though, and like that new announcer guy who hosted the game this evening, and people who may have met him but don't really know him calling him "Bobby" just seems wrong. I cant imagine him even saying "Please, call me Bobby." :D

Absolutely agree. I was getting tired of hearing the commentator call him Bobby all night.

You can't call him anything because he no longer takes calls on his Tuesday night coach's show. :)

Did anyone else hear that retard towards the end?

He said "don't sleep on Oklahoma with one loss. They only has one loss in 2006 and went to the national title game."

"Kansas State didn't come on the radar till last year, they beat oklahoma"

"Kansas State didn't come on the radar till last year, they beat oklahoma"I didn't catch that, but will listen for it when I watch the replay. He was annoying. Did the "Bobby" thing rub you the wrong way, like it did me?

Calling him Bobby was just kind of weird like the guy was making it up on his own and not because he heard some people really call him that. That would have been a good question to call his radio show to ask him. :)

Or call him Robert.

I don't think I remember this story. How sad.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Stoops

... his father was the long-time defensive coordinator of the football team. Bob and his three brothers (Ron Jr., Mike, and Mark) were all coached by Ron Sr. at Mooney. During a game in 1988 against the team coached by Ron Jr., Ron Sr. began experiencing chest pains. He was placed in an ambulance following the game and died en route to the hospital.

The only ones Ive heard call him Bobby are ******* announcers, who seem to think that gives them an image of intimacy with Bob.

I'd be willing to go with "Creator of Heaven and Earth" if the Cotton Bowl Candy keeps flowing our direction.

From a distance...:D

I heard folks yelling "GO BOBBY!", "GO GET EM BOBBY!" as he was headed up the ramp after Coaching the Team to a very nice lead over a stunned bunch of jayhawks. I think it's a term of endearment from Fans who feel they are a part of something special. BOBBY as Head Coach....is one of those very special people who have Coached the Teams we've gotten to watch for over a decade now. I think Bobby has earned the endearment.
