Last weekend, I saw someone on the sidelines with the name 'Ross' on their jersey. In pads. I thought Alex Ross was redshirting this year. (and I hope I'm right). Why would he be dressed for the game is that's true? Just to get the feel?

Sam Bradford and Ryan Broyles dressed as true freshmen, too. I think they're a little generous on the number of guys you can suit for a game.

You can dress for every game, but if you never play they can still redshirt you.

It's also very good for them. You never know how an inexperienced guy will perform if he's never dressed and worked out with the team. Given a chance to sort of job shadow during a game is something you don't get in practice.

1. Gives young players an early idea of what to expect for atmosphere.

2. Never can tell what will happen. Couple of key injuries, combined with ineffectiveness by other players, and that redshirt may have to come off.

Or Quentin Griffin for Jerald Moore in 1999. I can't remember though, was that planned our was it an in game injury situation? Seems like it was at Colorado if memory serves me right.

It was due to injury and it was to replace Michael Thornton, not Jerald Moore. Moore was a senior in 1995.

Huh. I didn't know redshirts could dress. Well, learn something new every day.

Alex Ross was at the game (he wears #28).

Players can dress and attend every game, and still red shirt. In fact, sometimes players can play a little and still red shirt. I'm starting to wonder if Taylor McNamara is going to be one of those guys.

That's right. I had it all goofed up.

Huh? I'm pretty sure the only way they can play even one snap and keep their redshirt is if they get a medical hardship. In the case of a medical hardship, they can actually play something like 2 full games and still get their hardship.

You're right. I think I pulled that out of my ***.

you can play a small amount, it seems.

i think with the hardship it was something like 30%

You can't play and keep a redshirt. But you can play and get a hardship if you don't have a redshirt.

I got a medical hardship the last time I got an allergy shot in the hip.

Redshirts don't officially happen until after the season. So yes, kids the coaches plan on redshirting can dress for every game.

Your not a red shirt until the season is over.

(Sure you can be a "potential" red shirt in the coaches eyes")

Redshirting rules changed several years ago to prohibit any PT to be eligible. Before the change, there was some amount of PT allowed and you would see FR in cleanup duty in early non-conference games.

BTW, I was surprised to see Durron Neal in a few plays last week as I thought he would redshirt. I wonder if the NCAA had told us earlier about Saunders, we would have still played him.

BTW == thread-jack, sorry.
