He was born in and spent his early years in Oklahoma but he has spent most of his professional life pandering to the old UT element in Austin, the ones who wish Austin would have stayed the "sleepy little college/hippie town" that it was in the 70's. Most of his columns lament that fact and picks on Californians as the reasons for Austin's changes over the years instead of the fact that the homegrown tech people are the ones who have driven most of it. He used to live in my neighborhood in South Austin until his wife died of cancer a few years ago. I in his eulogy of her he stated that she "proofed" all of his columns and filtered them, since she has gone he has taken the "crotchety old man" role to a new level on pretty much everything. Evidently his new wife doesn't filter what he thinks and neither does the editorial staff.
