I was driving west on I70 across Kansas one night going about 75. An 18 wheeler a few hundred yards in front of me hit a large deer bounding across the rode and that deer flew into pieces. Nothing I could do at that speed and I hit a piece of the deer large enough to take out my bumper. It took out the grill on the truck and both it's headlights. It must have been the time of year, because I saw several other places on that drive where a deer met a violent end. I decided it wasn't a good idea to drive from OKC to Denver in the middle of the night anymore.

On our last trip to Austin from Denver for the closing on our house down there we hit the Hill Country in the dark, pulled into our house about 1:30 AM. I saw about 30 live deer near the road after it got dark on the way into Austin. Driving from Austin to OKC at night never bothered us much because we never saw the same amount of road kill on I-35 that we saw on US-290 and I-10 heading west out to West Texas. Whenever we came back to Austin from the in-laws out there we always tried to get into Austin before dark.
