USS Liberty incident

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/USS_Liberty.jpg/300px-USS_Liberty.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_Liberty.jpg)
Damaged USS Liberty one day (June 9, 1967) after attack.

Date:
June 8, 1967

Place:
Mediterranean Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Sea) near Sinai Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinai_Peninsula)[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-Wikimapia-0)

Result:
Liberty severely damaged,
34 crewmen killed,
171 crewmen wounded

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy) technical research ship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_research_ship), USS Liberty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_(AGTR-5)), by Israeli Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_Air_Force) jet fighter aircraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighter_aircraft)and Israeli Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_Navy) torpedo boats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpedo_boat), on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-Day_War).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-NSAhistory0-1) The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 170 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-NSAhistory292652-2) At the time, the ship was ininternational waters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_waters) north of the Sinai Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinai_Peninsula), about 25.5 nmi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautical_mile) (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arish).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-Wikimapia-0)[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-NSAhistory26-3)
Both the Israeli and U.S. governments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_government_of_the_United_States) conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the identity of the USS Liberty,[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-NSAhistory57-4) though others, including all of the ship's survivors that could be located four decades later, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident#cite_note-trib-5)

How is this anyway a flame? I like talking about foreign policy and this is clearly something that is in our history. Maybe someone knows a whole lot more than I do about the Liberty. I would have been 9 when it happened and it was during the height of the Vietnam War. I would like to know why we were in the area, was this a recon ship, why we were we neutral according to the article. How come the crew felt it was a deliberate attack. Etc. Do you know the answers because I don't.

I think this was the real reason:

"Several books and the BBC documentary USS Liberty: Dead in the Water argued that Liberty was attacked in order to prevent the U.S. from knowing about the forthcoming attack in the Golan Heights (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Golan_Heights), which would violate a cease-fire to which Israel's government had agreed.[63] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-62)[dead link (http://www.soonerfans.com/wiki/Wikipedia:Link_rot)] However, Syria did not accept the cease fire until June 9, after the attack on Liberty.[64] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-63) Russian author Joseph Daichman, in his book "History of the Mossad" states Israel was justified in attacking the Liberty.[65] (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-Daichman-64) Israel knew that American radio signals were intercepted by the Soviet Union and that the Soviets would certainly inform Egypt of the fact that, by moving troops to the Golan Heights, Israel had left the Egyptian border undefended.[ (http://www.soonerfans.com/#cite_note-65)"

But that begs the question why didn't the Israeli's tell the US our radio messages were being intercepted by the Soviets instead of taking the risk alienating an ally?

Vet, don't know about his intent but I do know that I was in Pakistan
when that went down. Our base went on lock down and we were on
frozen shifts to electronically monitor what was happening. We had ragheads
up the wazzu outside the base. MP's with truck mounted air cooled 50 cal
patrolling the perimeter...had a couple of 'em stick their heads up over
the wall, bad choice...

Depends who is president. It'll suck for the average Iranian/Israeli if they decide to go at it but it ain't my business if they do...don't have a car so don't really gotta worry about gas prices :p On the other hand if Romney thinks its our sacred duty to help Israel defeat Iran...then yeah it could end up being a pretty damn bad idea

Vet this is what was in your link:

Moorer, who as top legal council to the official investigation is in a position to know, agrees that Israel intended to sink the USS Liberty and blame Egypt for it, thus dragging the United States into a war on Israel's behalf. This seems to be a common trick of Israel. Starting with the Lavon affair (http://whatreallyhappened.com/lavon.html), through the USS Liberty, to the fake radio transmitter that tricked Reagan into attacking Libya (http://whatreallyhappened.com/deception.html), to potentially 9-11 itself (http://whatreallyhappened.com/fiveisraelis.html), Israel's game is to frame Arabs and set them up as targets for the United States.

You tell me what the hell is the Lavon Affair or this thing about a fake transmitter?

To answer your question since you ask. Apparently you guys think I posted the message to flame Israel. I did not. My father attended Air War College with one of Israel's top Aces. To this day we are still friends with the Koren's and my sister has been over to see them. I have also been to Israel briefly. What you need to know about me is that I am an isolationist and I do not think we should fight any wars unless they directly affect us.

The other thing you should know is that my father attended several officer schools including flight schools with Iranian pilots. One of our dearest friends when I was growing up was a guy named Ali whom I called Olive who flew for the Iranian Air Force and finally as the Shah of Iran's pilot. He was pretty much like an uncle to me. The last time we saw him was at Andrew's AFB when he flew the Shah over for a meeting with the President. After that the revolution happened and we believed he was killed. My personal experience with Iranians has always been a good experience. I found them to be very friendly and nice people. That does not mean I like their government and I wish it would go away. But I feel very strongly that we can support pro-democracy movements in Iran and win in the long run. I hated Carter for allowing the Mullah's to take over that nation.

Forgot to mention one of my fathers favorite possessions is a gun camera picture of from our friends fighter taking out an Egyptian fighter that they believed was flown by a Soviet.

I have done a few dives in the Atlantic on German subs. In researching one of them they said they found Wonder bread onboard. That could only mean they were being supplied from the mainland. The best dive I did was out of Beauford NC. It is kind of sad to dive on those boats because you knew a lot of young men died when the boat went down.

And, my parents were born in a coal mining town in PA!
We were poor! The cheeze on my mac & cheese came from a gobment handout cheese bar.

But, never, NEVER a slave owner or black hater in the crowd.
Some folk are really insecure in their self-worth. Some folk like it that way.
But, that's just my perspective.
