There is a difference in how the Owen Field endzones are painted? They have a different look for conference and non-conference games:

Conference game (crimson endzone, white "Oklahoma" outlined in black and the area behind the endzone is white):

Non-conference game (unpainted background, crimson "Oklahoma" outlined in white and the area behind the endzone is crimson)

Haha. Jerk.

I was on Soonersports.com All-Access and came across a video of the grounds crew preparing the field. At the end of the video, they mentioned that little factoid about the endzones.

I did notice the difference, but not the reason behind it.

So are we going to switch it back for Notre Dame? I don't think it matters. They're not going to see the endzone that day anyway.

I actually did know that, and the reason, I think I watched the same video at some point. At least I'm not the ONLY total dork. ;)

Actually there is a real reason behind it besides just non-conf vs. conf:

There are two strains of grass that make up the field... one is a summer-early fall grass that starts to go dormant late Sep, early October. The second strain is growing in behind it and stays greener longer into late fall. I think one is a Kentucky blue grass and the other some kind of rye grass.

So.... the painting is largely to accomodate for the turnover of the grasses so they don't have to re-do the bleepin' thing in red when it does turn. Just touch-ups... much lower expense.

I was thinking that when I posted it. Somebody has to point out the intricacies of all that is Sooner Football! I believe the grass soonerboy_odanorth is talking about is a hybrid of Kentucky Blue and Northern California Sensimilla. :)

Makes sense.

I wonder what the annual upkeep costs are? I'm sure the new artificial turf would be cheaper in the long run, but I like that we have a natural grass field....and no gigantic crown in the middle of the field anymore.

FWIW, the non-conf look is more appealing to my eye.

I like my endzones like I like my hookers, painted.

My brother and I figured this out about 10 years ago when we were in band. I always thought that was kinda cool.

I've always thought it was cool since the first time they did it for A&M in 1999.

I really liked that 'throwback' endzones (with the diamonds). But, Missouri does that, and ruined it for me.
