what is this? the composite version of a CNC machine? You can make a gun now if you are willing to break the law.

This seems like a pipe dream to me. My guess is that the technology which is mainly used to print models and such is a long way from being able to handle the requirements of a weapon.

Did you watch? He clearly states several times that the weapon produced only has to work once, Thats doable
These aint gonna have to stand up to rigors of Combat

I did watch it. I have serious doubts that they could produce a design that would work once. Forgetting the problems associated with the materials, these printers work by depositing (or maybe subtracting) layers which means that at a microscopic level it will have a lego type layered structure. That doesn't seem to be much of a way to make a usable weapon.

this is a big thing with nerds right now with the 3-D printing. the quality of them seems to be getting better from what i was seeing the other day.

as this tech gets better, it could change a LOT of things.

i'm not really sure of what the real point of the open source weapon is. i'd imagine we are talking about a bigger impact outside of the US

They're already printing cars (http://jalopnik.com/5683746/this-is-the-first-3d-printed-car)...why not weapons.
