Don't ask me how this subject came up but it did in a football converstaion I had with my Dad. Notre Dame Cathedral is located in Paris, so shouldn't the teams at ND be called the Fighting Frogs?

This is what I found on that...

The official school mascot name is "The Ramblers". Knute Rockne's powerhouse teams of the late 1920's, though, had a ton of Irish on the team, so the nickname "Fighting Irish" almost immediately stuck.
In the early 1920's Notre Dame played a game against Harvard University" which is a Protestant school." Coach Rockne started 13 players that were of Irish descent and they were back ups and they crushed Harvard who was the #1 team in the country at that time. In the press conference afterward Coach Rockne stated "We are in Boston an Irish Catholic community and we are Irish and we will fight to the end. Because you can not defeat the fighting Irish"

Aye, lads, that we do.

BTW, this is the pure-gold find of the month, if not year:

This is a gem. (http://www.concannonvineyard.com/introducing-our-new-hand-crafted-concannon-irish-whiskey)

Concannon, a winery in Livermore, Calif., sent a bunch of Petite Syrah casks to a distillery in Ireland. The resulting whiskey is unbelievable.

I miss Murphy's.

I have no idea who it was that lied about us Irish Fighting all the time. We're all lovers.

84.2% of the citizens of the Republic of Ireland[1] and 43.8% of the estimated workforce of Northern Ireland[2] are Catholic.

That's today. Back when Knute was coaching it was probably closer to 100%.

Oh I almost forgot. God created the whiskey to keep the Irish from ruling the world.

I'm not Irish myself but they're like the Kiowa. They so damn bad you just have to have a certain respect for them.
