Looks like $20 a day was more than enough for all three guys.

I've wanted to go to the Moon since the early 70's.

Seeing Earth from Space would be cool as shlt.

Easy to say until you think about the fact that it's a full time job. Unless you're wealthy or retired that's not really an option.

Yep, standing on the moon would be awesome. I imagine the single guys could use that to their advantage too...

Not interested. Hell, I haven't even seen North Dakota yet. Way too much of Earth I'd like to see up close to want to go up to some rock in the sky.

In 1969, as a kid, I'd have gone for free, or turned it my Cowboy Hall of Fame covered wagon bank.

Now, just another unacceptable risk. Those astronauts were cut from the same cloth as other great pioneers. They did it for adventure and progress.
Luckily, being an Apollo astronaut looked pretty good on the resume.

I would imagine stepping on the moon was worth millions in future speaking engagements...

It's pretty close to the moon in appearance.

that's where i thought he was going with that at first

what does it cost to fly in the Virgin thing that just goes out to space and comes back? i think it's like $200,000

Astronauts were in the Air Force, weren't they? i don't think they were hurting for room and board too much. seeing that there were probably scores of people that would have and still would jump at that, i don't think pay is that much of an issue

what is $8 in 1969 Dollars worth in 2012?

it's something like $50 now

my per diem for Vegas was more than that. i think the food options on the moon aren't as good though...

And what were they going to spend their per diem on anyway? It's not like a regular TDY where you spend the money on booze and hookers. There were no strip clubs or whore houses on the moon. That we know of.

I think they got a better deal than Lovell, Swiggert and Haise and a heck of a lot better deal than White, Grissom and Chaffee.

Even with all failures and tragedies we've seen throughout the history of Space Exploration....I'd be on the next rocket out and like some here have said....I'd do it for free. I can see close ups on the Earth when I get back.

What an opportunity it would be to leave Earth's Atmosphere for even 15 minutes.

The money is immaterial, the opportunity to drink unlimited Tang? That my friend is priceless.
