View Full Version : A black day in Sooner History

Boomer and Sooner: Starting in 2005, OU began to use costumed mascots outside of the official mascot, the Schooner. Since the Schooner is pulled by white ponies named Boomer and Sooner, the school made the decision to create costumed mascots of the same names to be a fun extension of the traditional Schooner and real ponies.

Those first versions were especially horrid, with the goofy, cartoony faces and the blank stares.

Not as bad as the new black bear at Ole Miss....that school has no identity whatsoever. Worst branding in history.

You know you've sunk to a low when the best thing you can say is, "Atleast we're not as bad as Mississippi...."

Hell, that Oklahoma's thing, being 49th thanks to Mississippi. You can say that about a lot of things, not just football-related.

Ole Miss REALLY hates their mascot though. They're all like "He's wearing Bear Bryant's hat!"

It probably doesn't help that they've been sucking a lot lately while their SEC counterparts are racking up crystal balls...

The Ole Miss program was history after integration. There have been a few decent years, under Brewer and while Eli was there, but otherwise, they're a perennial bottom feeder and will always be. There's not enough talent or money in Mississippi, and there are three D-1 schools competing for limited talent.
My brother-in-law played there in the late '70's and was a team captain. He finally threw his hands up in the air and sent his third child to Alabama. Cancelled his season tickets. Said he's "finished" with them.

And every time I talk to a certain lawyer buddy of mine down in Mississippi, he has to bring up the 1999 Independence Bowl. Of course, I then remind him how he was always talking back then about how cool it would be if OU and Ole Miss could have a home and home series. And then, after what we did in 2000, he never brought up the home and home series again.

Don't forget who begat Peyton and Eli . . . Archie Manning!

I will never forget sitting with my dad one evening watching an Archie-led Ole Miss and bama going down to the wire in a game that see-sawed back and forth, both teams moving at will against the opposing defense, the Ole Miss crowd so loud and trying to will their team to victory, the Rebel band playing Dixie nonstop while someone was waving this huge Stars and Bars flag. After seeing what a spectacle it could be i wanted to attend a college football game.

I hi-five'd one of the horse pigs last season on the way back to my seat from the concession area during halftime. Do I lose "street cred" for that?

My kids love Boomer and Sooner. Every time the TV shows them, they scream, "Dad! Boomer and Sooner are at the basketball game, too!"

We sit close enough to the field in football that the kids pretty much watch their antics all day long.

So...for us, Boomer and Sooner are fine. They keep the kids' interest.

I hate to quibble, but they wave(d) the Battle Flag -- specifically the naval ensign. This is the 'Stars and Bars.'

Nope. They waved the real Stars 'n Bars...they sold it in the old Carl Coers bookstore on campus, long since gone. I was there.

Anyone remember the dude in the late 80's with slicked back hair and a crimson sportcoat. He walked up and down the isles slicking his eyebrows back and holding up a "D" and small white picket fence. THAT was the worst attempt ever to create a "mascot"

Actually, SicEmBaylor is correct ^^^Stars and Bars
Supposedly named that because it so closely resembled the "Stars and Stripes" of the Union.

Confedarate battle flag, the more rectangular version is the Confederate Navy Jack.

I misread what he posted. I was half drunk and thought he meant they waved the stars and bars, not the more recognizable flag. I can tell you, it was a strange scene.
I spent '83 in Oxford. I was majoring in History and my interests were pretty keenly focused on some courses offered by a professor there named David Sansing. I don't regret spending the year there, but one year was all I could stand. Most racist place I've ever seen. The first black frat house to be opened on fraternity row mysteriously burned down before they moved in. One of the cover pages to that year's annual shows the Klan marching through town square. I think they had their first black cheerleader ever that year. Caused quite a stir.
It's a pretty wealthy campus, too. Lots of old Delta money and BMW's. Never seen so many good looking women in one place, either. That's the only reason I got through it.

It's hard to find a place that has better looking women than Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia...

I think that was Myron Noodleman. A take on the character the Nutty Professor by Jerry Lewis.

Hey does anyone watch the show "AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR" on G4? No its not really stupid show about Ninjas...its show where these crazy good athletes, go through a rediculous set of obstacles in a timed race. Most people cant get through all the challenges. Hosted by Johnny Mosely. There are several regional competitions then the final round is in Vegas.

Anyways...I was watching last night and one of the competitors to make it though....was our very own "all american" mascot. The dude who wore the Boomer Horsepig outfit.

...again, he was one of the few to even make it though. So POW all you horsepig haters!

I was pretty impressed with the Russian women in track and field. Now I know why my son went to St. Petersburg.

I like the mascot's Boomer and Sooner. But one school has never decided on a mascot. Stanford... Although they were known as the Indians from 1930-1972. They are now known as the Stanford Cardinal. But that is their school color.

http://www.gostanford.com/school-bio/stan-nickname-mascot.html

The Mascot: There is no official mascot at Stanford University. The "Tree," which is a member of the Stanford Band, is representative of El Palo Alto, the Redwood tree which is the logo of the city of Palo Alto.
