Sooners suddenly overshadowed in their own state
By JEFF LATZKE (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- When last season began, coach Bob Stoops declared it was about time for his Sooners to win another national championship.

When it ended, the Sooners didn't even have bragging rights in their own state, having lost the Bedlam rivalry game in a 44-10 blowout to Oklahoma State.

Heading into the 2012 season, Oklahoma is loaded again with talent and preseason expectations. But Oklahoma State has been gaining ground in recent years, finally breaking through last season with its first Big 12 title and BCS bowl game appearance before finishing with the No. 3 ranking.

No elaboration? Did the writer accidentally hit "submit" before he was done?

The Associated Press usually moves a shorter version initially, then expands later.

For example, when LSU lost its honey badger, AP probably did a few sentences to appear on news sites right away, then did a fuller information-filled version later with Lester quotes and such.

So, my guess is that in a few hours, you'll see a bigger story.

Or not. Either way, won't you hate the story regardless?

Don't worry too much about it. Every decade or so, OSU wins one, gets all excited, declares OU dead and buried and then loses another 9-10 straight.

This year will merely be the beginning of their new losing streak.

Aggie is aggie.

Badj, same thing I was thinking, where's the rest of the story?, then thought about it more, who cares? Aggies will soon enough fall to medocrity.

So, for Oklahoma St. to win the Big 12 championship, it requires their best team ever with their best QB ever (and 28 frickin' years old) and their best receiver ever and for Texas to suck and for Oklahoma to have a team so bad, that they lose to a horrible Texas Tech team in Norman and also lose to Baylor for the first time ever. I would say that doesn't bode well for Oklahoma St.

I really don't know Poke history, so I had to look it up on the Intraweb.

Protip: Don't type "OSU football," because you'll get Ohio State instead :stunned:

Poke football facts:
- Pokes have finished the season ranked 12 times.
- Four of those 12 times have been the last four seasons.
- Their last losing season was 2005 (4-7, 1-7), Gundy's first as head coach.
- They have won the Heisman, Maxwell, Walter Camp, Ray Guy, Bilitnekoff and Groza awards.
- But three of those (Heisman, Maxwell and Walter Camp) were all won in the same year (1988) by the same guy (Barry Sanders)
- And the other three (Guy, Biletnekoff and Groza) were all won since 2008.

If Pokes can cling to anything, it's that the previous times they've finally beaten us, they've done it in pairs (2001-02 and 1997-98). But, they have never won more than twice in a row (admittedly, there were some ties mixed in there).

So, what does last year mean? It means a lot of season ticket sales. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/blogs/sportspost.aspx?OSU_sets_a_football_seasonticket_r ecord/11-16484) And not much else.

Have to hand it to Gundy - the pokes have a stronger program since he turned 40 and became a man (with Picken's checkbook at his disposal). But the blowout against OU last year came at the depths of the lowest lows of the season when the OU team didn't even merit being ranked. Like Arnold, we'll be back.

Here's all you need to know. They will celebrate a 10-3 season in Stillwater this year. Another 10-3 season in Norman and depression might set in.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- When last season began, coach Bob Stoops declared it was about time for his Sooners to win another national championship. Okay, we get it...we had a bad last year compared to many, including oSu who usually sucks. Lets move on writer dude. Thats behind us. Then...First off, Coach Stoops doesn't make predictions like that, so hes exaggerating at best, and secondly, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while.

You know who REALLY feels left out in the discussion? Tulsa Golden Hurricane fans. They did not have exactly a sh!tty season last year and they went bowling, and really, they've had a good few runs under that slimeball Todd Graham and that other slimeball (except he's a Parkinson's survivor now so we can't call him that can we?) Kragthorpe and now under their current coach (who hopefully will not become a slimeball) Bill Blankenship.

Since 2005:
05: 9-4 (Krag)
06: 8-5 (Krag)
07: 10-4 (Todd)
08: 11-3 (Todd)
09: 5-7 (Todd)
10: 10-3 (Todd)
11: 8-4 (Blank)

They are probably going to win the (depeated) C-USA this year. They have not exactly sucked when they've had to face the likes of Bois Estate, Poke State and yes, the University of Oklahoma. Still, they are getting majorly overshadowed by the recent successes of OU and Pokette.

It is what it is, I guess. By hiring a local high school coach they are either hoping for a Sherri Coale effect, or were trying to get a cheaper alternative to the previous "bye, gotta better offer!" expensive coaches.

But what about Oklahoma Panhandle State! No one ever mentions them either. :D
